Recent studies have suggested that hyperplastic polyps may be benign precursor lesions for a distinct subset of colorectal tumors. We conducted a clinic-based case-control study to evaluate risk factors for hyperplastic polyps. Cases with hyperplastic polyps (n = 219), adenomas (n = 437), and both types of polyps (n = 138), along with colonoscopy-negative controls (n = 708), were identified at ...

Endoscopic evaluation of a 51 year old woman, who had referred with a 6-months complaint of epigastric pain and fullness in the upper abdomen, demonstrated a large polyp in the greater curvature of the middle third of the stomach. The size of the pedunculated polyp was about 25 mm. Polypectomy was done by snar base and diluted epinephrine was injected submucosally and in to the stem and polyp r...

We compared clinicopathological characteristics of colorectal polyps, in order to investigate the hypothesis of neoplastic transformation of hyperplastic polyps. Of 4723 colonoscopies performed in our department over four years, 22 patients with 23 mixed hyperplastic polyps (MHAP) were found. These were compared with 61 patients with 86 hyperplastic polyps, 40 with 58 tubular adenomas and 27 wi...

An admixture of hyperplastic and adenomatous components within the same polyp is unusual. Adenocarcinoma arising from a mixed hyperplastic/adenomatous polyp (MHAP) occurs even more rarely. We report the first case of a 59-year-old male who presented with invasive adenocarcinoma originating from a MHAP at a sigmoid colon and synchronous transverse colon cancer.

A 65−year−old man was referred to our de− partment for polypectomy. A polyp, 20 mm in diameter, was found in the as− cending colon on colonoscopy (Figure1 a). The polyp surface was covered by charac− teristic multiple dimples, long thin ves− sels, and mucus. Chromoendoscopy with 0.4% indigo carmine enhanced the ap− pearance of the polyp surface dimples, and subsequent magnification revealed a t...

BACKGROUND & AIMS Obesity and diabetes mellitus are associated with an increased incidence of proximal colon cancer. Colonic adenoma that has been reported to be associated with elevated serum insulin levels and subsets of hyperplastic polyps might serve as a precursor of colon cancer. In this study, we sought to determine segment-specific associations between serum insulin levels and the preva...

py for the investigation of lower abdominal pain. Colonoscopy showed a whitish, flat, elevated polyp, 10mm in diameter, in the ascending colon (l" Fig. 1). Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) was carried out, and the resected specimen histologically revealed both invasive cancer and serrated adenomatous glands coexisting in an inverted hyperplastic polyp (IHP) (l" Fig. 2a–c). A follow-up colonos...

We present the case of a 76-year-old man with gastroduodenal intussusception secondary to a gastric hyperplastic polyp. Intussusception in the adult population occurs infrequently. Our patient presented with gastroduodenal intussusception, which is very uncommon and accounts for <10% of all types of intussusception. This case is unique in that partial endoscopic resection of the gastric hyperpl...

BACKGROUND Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) is commonly seen in the upper esophagus during endoscopyand is generally considered a benign disease. A hyperplastic polyp and an adenocarcinoma arising in heterotopic gastric mucosa are quite rare occurences. CASE PRESENTATIONS We present two cases: The first is a patient who suffered from dysphagia because of a large hyperplastic polyp that arose ...
