A feasibility study with three pre-conditioning times was carried out to examine the effect of anaerobic pre-treatment on phosphorus removal by aeration. The results showed that soluble phosphorus could be decreased from 120 mg L−1 to about 40 mg L−1 within one-day aeration. However, soluble phosphorus concentration was found not affected by pre-conditioning, but more pH dependent. Anaerobic pr...

Microalgae in waste stabilization ponds (WSP) have been shown to accumulate polyphosphate. This luxury uptake of phosphorus is influenced by the wastewater phosphate concentration, light intensity and temperature, but the dynamics of how these factors affect luxury uptake with respect to time are not understood. With improved understanding of the dynamics of this mechanism and how it could be m...

1. The soluble and insoluble fractions of eight species of bacteria were separated by centrifuging the material obtained after disintegrating the cells by shaking with glass beads. 2. The insoluble material, believed to be at least mainly derived from the cell wall, accounted in most cases for about half of the dry weight of the cell. 3. Estimations were performed on both fractions for ash, nit...

There are differences between the EPA Method 365 and the APHA-AWWA-WEF's Standard Method 4500 with respect to the post-digestion treatment procedures of the persulfate-digested water. The effects on total phosphorus analysis of different post-digestion treatment procedures, such as neutralization and reacidification, and shaking/settling, were investigated in this study using the total phosphor...

Acid stimulated accumulation of insoluble phosphorus within microbial cells is highly beneficial to wastewater treatment but remains largely unexplored. Using single cell analyses and next generation sequencing, the response of active polyphosphate accumulating microbial communities under conditions of enhanced phosphorus uptake under both acidic and aerobic conditions was characterised. Phosph...

Isolated mouse liver mitochondria were incubated in two types of P(32)-labelled sucrose-phosphate buffers. The first contained no added ATP or oxidizable substrate. The second contained added ATP. Samples were taken at specified times, up to 60 minutes, and analyses were made of the mitochondrial TCA-soluble inorganic P(32) and the total mitochondrial residue P(31) and P(32). The results of the...

The most marked chemical changes in a disintegrating spleen are noticed during the period when karyorrhexis and karyolysis are the characteristic features. When pyknosis alone is prominent almost all of the several constituents are in the coagulable or precipitable fraction, just as they are in the original normal tissue. After karyolysis is practically complete the coagulable and precipitable ...

–Phosphorus is one of the most vital macronutrients required for the growth and development of plants. A large number of microorganisms present in the rhizosphere are known to solubilize and make available the insoluble phosphorus in the available form to the plants. A total of fifty phosphate solublizing bacterial colonies were isolated on the Pikovskaya’s (PKV) agar medium, containing insolub...

A mild method for the facile removal of phosphine oxide from the crude products of Wittig and Appel reactions is described. Work-up with oxalyl chloride to generate insoluble chlorophosphonium salt (CPS) yields phosphorus-free products for a wide variety of these reactions. The CPS product can be further converted into phosphine.
