Keratinases are proteolytic enzymes predominantly active when keratin substrates are available that attack disulfide bridges in the keratin to convert them from complex to simplified forms. Keratinases are essential in preparation of animal nutrients, protein supplements, leather manufacture, textile processing, detergent formulation, feather meal processing for feed and fertilizer, the pharmac...

Feather keratin is highly resistant to degradation, but some keratinase producing microorganisms can easily degrade these insoluble keratins. These keratinase producing species have an important application in removal of poultry waste and recycled into valuable byproduct. Bacillus sp was screened from soil samples of slaughterhouse and poultry farm area using azokeratin medium. Highest keratina...

The aim of this study was to find the optimal conditions of a newly isolated Streptomyces strain JRS 19. Screening for keratinase producing bacteria and their keratinase production were investigated. The keratinase produced by the isolate was purified by chromatographic techniques and the optimum pH maintained was 7.0 and maintained at different temperatures Viz., 20ºC, 25ºC, 30ºC, 35ºC and 40º...

Feeding trials were designed to evaluate the nutritive value of feather meal treated by K6 and K82 keratinase. There were five treatments in feather meal preparation: CFM (non-enzymatically treated feather meal), K6FM (K6 keratinase treated feather meal), K82FM (K82 keratinase treated feather meal), K6:K82FM [K6 and K82 keratinase (5:1) treated feather meal] and CMFM (commercial enzyme treated ...

The present study deals with isolation, identification and characterization of feather degrading bacterium. The keratinolytic bacteria were isolated from feather dumped soil. The colonies showed higher keratinase production was identified as Bacillius sp, as per Bergey’s manual method. Keratinase producing Bacillus sp, showed higher enzymes production. The crude filtrate showed specific activit...

A keratinolytic enzyme secreted by Aspergillus flavus K-03 cultured in feather meal basal medium (FMBM) containing 2% (w/v) chicken feather was purified and characterized. Keratinolytic enzyme secretion was the maximal at day 16 of the incubation period at pH 8 and 28℃. No relationship was detected between enzyme yield and increase of fungal biomass. The fraction obtained at 80% ammonium sulfat...

The main keratinase (kerA) gene from the Bacillus licheniformis S90 was optimized by two codon optimization strategies and expressed in Pichia pastoris in order to improve the enzyme production compared to the preparations with the native kerA gene. The results showed that the corresponding mutations (synonymous codons) according to the codon bias in Pichia pastoris were successfully introduced...

Seven species of Microsporum, 4 of Trichophyton and 1 Epidermophyton including 55 species belonging to 33 genera were studied for extracellular keratinase. The preliminary screening was done as their ability to develop clearing zone formation. The keratinase of Microsporum species ranged from 50-300ku/ml and of Trichophyton 100-140ku/ml while that of Epidermophyton was 20ku/ml.

Feathers are byproduct waste of poultry processing plant and produced in large amount. A small percentage of feather waste is steamed, chemically treated, ground, to form feather meal a dietary protein supplement for animals. Alternatively, keratin can be biodegraded by some Keratinolytic bacteria and in this study Keratinase producing bacteria and their Keratinolytic enzyme production was inve...

Three Bacillus species (B. subtilis LFB-FIOCRUZ 1270, B. subtilis LFB-FIOCRUZ 1273, and B. licheniformis LFB-FIOCRUZ 1274), isolated from the poultry industry, were evaluated for keratinase production using feathers or feather meal as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources in a submerged fermentation. The three Bacillus spp. produced extracellular keratinases and peptidases after 7 days. Feather ...
