OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 for treating infantile colic. METHODS A systematic literature retrieval was carried out to obtain randomized controlled trials of L. reuteri DSM 17938 for infantile colic. Trials were performed before May 2015 and retrieved from the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane library, CNKI, WanFang, VIP, and CBM databases. Data ext...

Lactobacillus reuteri inhibits Staphylococcus aureus growth on Baird-Parker agar. This activity required the presence of tellurite and was not shared with other lactic acid bacteria or an L. reuteri mutant defective in cystine metabolism. Secreted products generated from L. reuteri cystine metabolism and thiols were shown to augment tellurite toxicity.

Background and Objectives: Chemical synthesis and extraction of flavorings from natural sources include disadvantages. However, biotechnology is a preferred method for biosynthesis of flavorings. The objective of this study was to synthesize natural esters with fruity flavors in whey using lipase of Palatase in combination with ethanol fermentation. Materials and Methods: Lactobacillus ferment...

In this study, Lactobacillus plantarum (ATCC 8014), Lactobacillus casei (ATCC 393), Lactobacillus lactis (ATCC 7830) and Lactobacillus fermentum (ATCC 9338) and L. reuteri strains were isolated from goat, sheep, cattle and camel rumen. The bacterial strains were cultured anaerobically in MRS broth and MRS agar at 37±1°C and administered (10 CFU/mL) separately to 1 day-old Lohman, Hubbard and Ro...

Recent studies have suggested that the topical application of probiotic bacteria can improve skin health or combat disease. We have utilized a primary human keratinocyte culture model to investigate whether probiotic bacteria can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus infection. Evaluation of the candidate probiotics Lactobacillus reuteri ATCC 55730, Lactobacillus rhamnosus AC413, and Lactobacillus sali...

Fructosyltransferase (FTF) enzymes have been characterized from various Gram-positive bacteria, but not from Lactobacillus sp. In a screening of 182 lactobacilli for polysaccharide production only one strain, Lactobacillus reuteri strain 121, was found to produce a fructan being a levan. Here we report the first-time identification and biochemical characterization of a Lactobacillus FTF enzyme....

Classified as a distinct species in 1980, Lactobacillus reuteri strains have been used in probiotic formulations for intestinal and urogenital applications. In the former, the primary mechanism of action of L. reuteri SD2112 (ATCC 55730) has been purported to be its ability to produce the antibiotic 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA), also known as reuterin. In the vagina, it has been postulated ...

Lactobacillus reuteri is used as probiotic culture in food and feed applications; however, strain specific properties of L. reuteri that mediate probiotic activity remain unknown. This study aimed to determine effects of feed fermentation with exopolysaccharide and reutericyclin producing L. reuteri on the transition of the gut microbiome of piglets after weaning. The reutericyclin and reuteran...
