AIM This study aimed at evaluating the prevalence of high anticardiolipin antibody and lupus anticoagulant levels in women with histories of at least two miscarriages. METHODS The presence of high anticardiolipin antibody and lupus anticoagulant levels were evaluated in 52 patients with ages between 17 and 41 (mean 26.7 years old) who had histories of repeated miscarriages. RESULTS High ant...

Warfarin therapy is used in lupus anticoagulant patients with thrombosis and yet the prothrombin time (PT)/international normalized ratio (INR) in these patients can sometimes be falsely elevated. Both a PT-based factor II (FII) assay and a chromogenic, enzymatic factor X (CFX) assay have been used for monitoring when the INR may be artifactual. This study compared FII and CFX assays in lupus a...

We report two cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with an antibody to phospholipids, namely the lupus anticoagulant. Both patients later developed further immunologically mediated conditions. The importance of screening for the lupus anticoagulant in addition to anticardiolipin antibodies in this condition and the need for follow-up of such patients is discussed.

To determine whether an association exists between the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies and pregnancy loss, a cross-sectional study was performed. Consecutive women who were referred to three outpatient rheumatology clinics and who had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a history of one or more pregnancies were evaluated. Patients were interviewed to determine outcomes of all previou...

Antiphospholipid syndrome(APLS) is a prothrombotic state characterized by recurrent venous thrombotic events including deep venous thrombosis, as well as pulmonary embolism, arterial thrombosis, recurrent fatal loss due to placental thrombosis and the presence of circulating antiphospholipid antibodies(APA) (Roubey RAS, 2001). As both thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity have a large number of ot...

background: severe preeclampsia is a quite well-known entity with high incidence of both maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. although little is known about its etiology, inherited disorders of hemostasis and antiphospholipid syndrome have been postulated as common causes. the present study was conducted to evaluate the association of these two entities with preeclampsia in a group of ir...

Thirty patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and suspected secondary antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APLAS) were evaluated in the study based on their clinical manifestations. The aim was to study the prevalence of various antiphospholipid antibodies, compare the tests used for their detection and to find a correlation between clinical and laboratory parameters. Coagulation tests...

Antiphospholipid antibodies, including anticardiolipin antibodies, are frequently detected in sera from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (1). Numerous reports have associated these autoantibodies with various venous and arterial thrombotic disorders, including cerebral infarction (2), deep venous thrombosis (3), thrombocytopenia (1), pulmonary embolism (4), and recurrent fetal loss wi...

We report a case of an anti-nuclear antibody (ANA)-negative patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) accompanied with anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) and lupus nephritis (LN). Histological examination of placenta obtained by an artificially-induced abortion revealed multiple thromboses in the placental villi. Histology of biopsied kidney tissue revealed minimal change with depo...

Antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) may be detected in normal pregnancies and also may cause thrombosis, recurrent fetal loss, placental infarction and preeclampsia. In the present study the possible differences in APLA titer between healthy pregnant women and preeclampsia cases without history of thrombosis was examined. The APLA titer in 50 healthy pregnant women with 50 preeclampsia cases wit...
