Lymnaea cousini Jousseaume, 1887 was collected in Mucubaji, Merida State, Venezuela, from a permanent pond located at a very high altitude (3760 m). Identification of the collected specimens was made by comparison with the original description of the shell by Jousseaume and the description of the renal organ and reproductive system of topotypic specimens by Paraense.

the laboratory infection of lymnaea gedrosiana with 2,5 and 10 miracidia of fasciola gigantica resulted in infection rates of 20%, 40% and 69%, respectively, with a prepatent period of 66-88 days. there was a significant difference in infection rate between the snails infected with 2 and those with 10 miracidia (p<0.05). at 92 days post- infection there was 25% to 33.3% of live snails still har...

background: in this study the haemolymph components of infected and none infected lymnaea gedrosiana with xiphidiocercaria larvae was compared. methods: five hundred fifty lymnaea snails were collected from ilam and mazandaran provinces, iran, during 2008-2009. the snails were transported to the lab at tehran university of medical sciences and their cercarial sheddings were studied. haemolmyp...

background: trematodes are a diverse group of endoparasites which require molluscan and vertebrate animals as intermediate and definitive hosts in their life cycle. the present study was carried out to determine the diversity and geographic distribution of infection with trematodes’cercariae in the snail lymnaea gedrosiana from north-west iran. methods: a total number of 6759 lymnaeidae snails ...

Background & Objective: The province of Khuzestan with its wide geographical area and its tropical climate is susceptible for the maintenance of snails. One of the prevalent intermediate hosts for trematode in this area is the gasteropode snail, Lymnaea gedrosina. This study is the first research, undertaken to determine the infection rate, biological characteristics and Longevity Lymnaea gedro...

1. Temperature-dependent effects on respiratory behaviour as well as the corresponding temperature-dependent activities of identified neurons within the respiratory network of the pulmonate snail Lymnaea stagnalis were investigated. 2. Lymnaea lung ventilation terminated at low temperatures (under 10 1C) while temperature elevation increased ventilation rates. The respiratory central pattern ge...

We report here that unlike what was suggested for many vertebrate neurons, synaptic transmission in Lymnaea stagnalis occurs independent of a physical interaction between presynaptic calcium channels and a functional complement of SNARE proteins. Instead, synaptic transmission in Lymnaea requires the expression of a C-terminal splice variant of the Lymnaea homolog to mammalian N- and P/Q-type c...

Axotomized central neurons of most invertebrate species demonstrate a strong regenerative capacity, and as such may provide valuable molecular insights and new tools to promote axonal regeneration in injured mammalian neurons. In this study, we identified a novel molluscan protein, caltubin, ubiquitously expressed in central neurons of Lymnaea stagnalis and locally synthesized in regenerating n...

Environmental calcium is a major factor affecting the distribution of freshwater gastropods. Whilst the effects on growth and morphology are fairly well understood, little is known about how calcium availability affects other aspects of gastropod biology. Lymnaea stagnalis (L.) is considered a calciphile and exhibits reduced growth and survival in environments containing less than 20 mg l(-1) C...
