We have selected Ia variants from the Ia+ (H-2d) M12.4.1 B cell lymphoma that are negative on the cell surface for one or both Ia isotypes. The molecular analysis of two such independently selected cell lines, M12.A2 and M12.C3, is reported here. This analysis revealed that the genes encoding Ad beta (M12.A2) and Ed beta (M12.C3) contained identical single-nucleotide transitions that resulted i...

Julius Whiston [6] calculated the maximum size of an irredundant generating set for Sn and An by examination of maximal subgroups. Using analogous considerations, we will compute upper bounds to this value for the first two Mathieu groups, M11 and M12. Computational results gave explicit irredundant generating sets of M11 and M12 of size 5 and 6, respectively. Together these give the full resul...

Purified, recombinant M12 protein from Streptococcus pyogenes CS24 has recently been demonstrated to bind human immunoglobulin G3 (IgG3). The binding site for IgG has been localized to an internal peptide encoded by a PvuII fragment of the gene emm12. We have investigated the ability of an isolated recombinant M12 protein consisting of the peptide encoded by the PvuII fragment to bind various m...

We study a Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S observation of the Galactic globular cluster M12. With a 26 ks exposure time, we detect 6 X-ray sources inside the half-mass radius (2.16) of which two are inside the core radius (0.72) of the cluster. If we assume these sources are all associated with globular cluster M12, the luminosity LX among these sources between 0.3-7.0 keV varies roughly from ...

We study a construction of the Mathieu group M12 using a game reminiscent of Loyd’s “15-puzzle”. The elements of M12 are realized as permutations on 12 of the 13 points of the finite projective plane of order 3. There is a natural extension to a “pseudogroup” M13 acting on all 13 points, which exhibits a limited form of sextuple transitivity. Another corollary of the construction is a metric, a...

Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) are potent mitogens for FRTL5 rat thyroid follicular cells. IGFs also synergize the independent mitogenic effects of thyrotropin-stimulating hormone (TSH) and other agents that increase intracellular AMP concentration. We examined whether FRTL5 cells and M12 cells, a TSH-independent mutant cell line derived therefrom, secrete IGF that regulates the growth of r...

BACKGROUND Children living with HIV continue to be in urgent need of combined antiretroviral therapy (ART). Strategies to scale up and improve pediatric HIV care in resource-poor regions, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, require further research from these settings. We describe treatment outcomes in children treated in rural Uganda after 1 and 2 years of ART start. METHODS Cross-sectional as...

S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM) is an important molecule in the cellular metabolism of mammals. In this study, we examined several of the physiological characteristics of a SAM-accumulating strain of the yeast Scheffersomyces stipitis (M12), including SAM production, ergosterol content, and ethanol tolerance. S. stipitis M12 accumulated up to 52.48 mg SAM/g dry cell weight. Proteome analyses show...

We show how to use the elements of a sharply k-transitive permutation group of degree n to form error-correcting codes, as suggested by Blake [1], presenting suitable decoding algorithms for these codes. In particular, we concentrate on using the Mathieu group M12 to form a (12,95040,8)-code to correct three errors. The algorithm we give for this code differs from that given by Cohen and Deza [2].
