Here we discuss the lot sizing problem of product returns and remanufacturing. Let us consider a forecast of demands and product returns over a finite planning horizon — the problem is to determine an optimal production plan. This consists of either manufacturing new products or remanufacturing returned units, and in this way meets both demands at minimum costs. The costs of course are the fixe...

Cellular manufacturing is a promising approach for grouping eeciency in manufacturing systems. Although this problem has been extensively studied in the literature, very few authors have proposed exact methods. The basic cellular manufacturing problem consists in deening cells which lead to the minimum number of bottleneck elements. In this paper, we consider a new formulation of the cellular m...

QbD is a systemic approach to pharmaceutical development. It means designing and developing formulations and manufacturing processes to ensure predefined product quality. Some of the QbD elements include defining a target product quality profile, designing product and manufacturing processes, identifying critical quality attributes, process parameters, and sources of variability and controlling...

Realistic modeling of cost of manufacturing is essential both for estimating cost of a product and for optimizing alternate manufacturing strategies. Although there are many factors that affect cost of manufacturing, the single most important parameter for estimating the cost of manufacturing is tolerance (deviation from the nominal size). Since tolerance affects the manufacturing cost directly...

In this paper we consider the problem of cyclic schedules such as arise in manufacturing. We introduce a new formulation of this problem that is a very simple modi cation of a standard job shop scheduling formulation, and which enables us to use existing constraint reasoning techniques to generate cyclic schedules. We present evidence for the e ectiveness of this formulation, and describe exten...

Nolde and Morari [10] study a steel manufacturing scheduling problem where the tasks must be scheduled such that electricity consumption matches to a pre-specified periodic energy chart. They propose a continuous time integer linear programming formulation to solve the problem. In this note, we present an alternative continuous time formulation that improves significantly the computation time.
