A manometric method for measuring photosynthesis in marine algae is described. Photosynthesis in the red alga Gigartina harveyana is shown to be similar in all important respects to photosynthesis in Chlorella and other Chlorophyceae.

Coralline red algae are significant components of sea bottom and up to now considered as exclusively marine species. Here we present the first coralline alga from a freshwater environment, found in the Cetina River (Adriatic Sea watershed). The alga is fully adapted to freshwater, as attested by reproductive structures, sporelings, and an inability to survive brackish conditions. Morphological ...

This paper reports the results of flavonoids determination expressed in rutin from marine algae. For this purpose, rutin and rutin AlCl3 complexes were spectrophotometrically studied in three domains of ligand concentrations: ligand Crut=1.34-6.7mg/L, 4-20mg/L and 2-32mg/L. The precision, accuracy, specificity, and the quantification limit of the method were verified. The calibration curve trac...

Oct-1-en-3-ol has been studied among oxylipins as a global metabolome that induce the defense of marine algae. The present short review summarized research oct-1-en-3-ol stress response molecule in algae including different aspects: (i) its biosynthesis from fatty acids; (ii) distribution algae; (iii) direct effect on microorganisms infecting thalli; (iv) an indirect communication for alga-alga...

A Halomonas sp., a marine halophilic and oligotrophic bacterium, was grown on exudates of Dunaliella bardawil. The bacteria increased the solubility of Fe, thereby enhancing its availability to the algae. As a result, the algal growth rate increased. Because of these syntrophic relations, growth of the marine alga D. bardawil was facilitated at Fe levels that would otherwise induce Fe deficienc...

Flavobacteriia are recognized as key players in the marine carbon cycle, due to their ability to efficiently degrade algal polysaccharides both in the open ocean and in coastal regions. The chemical complexity of algal polysaccharides, their differences between algal groups and variations through time and space, imply that marine flavobacteria have evolved dedicated degradation mechanisms and r...

Under global change, populations have four possible responses: 'migrate, acclimate, adapt or die' (Gienapp et al. 2008 Climate change and evolution: disentangling environmental and genetic response. Mol. Ecol. 17, 167-178. (doi:10.1111/j.1365-294X.2007.03413.x)). The challenge is to predict how much migration, acclimatization or adaptation populations are capable of. We have previously shown th...

The marine red alga, Porphyra sanjuanensis is found mainly in the high intertidal zone and at low tide subject to frequent and extreme water stress, often accompanied by high temperatures and light intensities. Such exposures can lead to severe desiccation which is accompanied by the progressive loss of photosynthetic activity. Even following the loss of more than 90% of the thallus water conte...
