Citation: Egan S and Thomas T (2015) Editorial for: Microbial symbiosis of marine sessile hosts-diversity and function. The marine surface environment is home to a large and often diverse community of microorganisms. Yet compared to terrestrial ecosystems we still know little about the diversity, degree of host-specificity, functional role or the molecular mechanisms of host-microbe interaction...

A natural and efficient method has been developed for the synthesis of quinoline derivatives in good-to-high yields, from various aryl aldehydes, amines and phenyl acethylene, using marine sponge/I2 as a green catalyst

background and objectives: in marine actinomycetes, carotenoid production occurs in constitutive, light-dependent or cryptic manner. the present work deals with the fermentative production of carotenoids from marine actinomycetes. materials and methods: marine actinomycetes namely streptomyces strain aqbmm35 was isolated from the marine sponge mycale mytilorum collected from south west coast of...

The selection of a suitable scaffold matrix is critical for cell-based bone tissue engineering. This study aimed to identify and characterize natural marine sponges as potential bioscaffolds for osteogenesis. Callyspongiidae marine sponge samples were collected from the Fremantle coast of Western Australia. The sponge structure was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Hematoxyl...

Cyanobacteria represent one of the most common members of the sponge-associated bacterial community and are abundant symbionts of coral reef ecosystems. In this study we used Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and molecular techniques (16S rRNA gene marker) to characterize the spatial distribution of cyanobionts in the widely dispersed marine intertidal sponge Hymeniacidon perlevis along th...

Recent studies have unravelled the diversity of sponge-associated bacteria that may play essential roles in sponge health and metabolism. Nevertheless, our understanding of this microbiota remains limited to a few host species found in restricted geographical localities, and the extent to which the sponge host determines the composition of its own microbiome remains a matter of debate. We addre...

The marine environment is a rich source of biodiversity and chemical compounds, and based on biodiversity knowledge, it is believed that the highest biodiversity is related to living organisms in tropical and semi-equatorial regions. The goal of this study was the biodiversity of Demospongiae sponge in Assaluyeh area in May 2018. Sampling carried oyu by using Coadrat in three sites with three r...

To date, only one marine sponge pathogen (Pseudoalteromonas sp. strain NW 4327) has fulfilled Koch's postulates. We report the 4.48-Mbp draft genome sequence of this strain, which is pathogenic to the Great Barrier Reef sponge Rhopaloeides odorabile. The sequence provides valuable information on sponge-pathogen interactions, including the mode of transmission and associated virulence factors.

Urea is one of the dominant organic nitrogenous compounds in the oligotrophic oceans. Compared to the knowledge of nitrogen transformation of nitrogen fixation, ammonia oxidization, nitrate and nitrite reduction mediated by sponge-associated microbes, our knowledge of urea utilization in sponges and the phylogenetic diversity of sponge-associated microbes with urea utilization potential is very...
