Salen Mn complexes, including EUK-134, EUK-189 and a newer cyclized analog EUK-207, are synthetic SOD/catalase mimetics that have beneficial effects in many models of oxidative stress. As oxidative stress is implicated in some forms of delayed radiation injury, we are investigating whether these compounds can mitigate injury to normal tissues caused by ionizing radiation. This review describes ...

The theoretical study of Mn(salen) catalysts has been traditionally performed under the assumption that Mn(acacen') (acacen' = 3,3'-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanylylidene))bis(prop-1-en-olate)) is an appropriate surrogate for the larger Mn(salen) complexes. In this work, the geometry and the electronic structure of several Mn(salen) and Mn(acacen') model complexes were studied using Density Function...

Manganese-salen complexes (Mn-Salen), including EUK-8 [manganese N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine chloride] and EUK-134 [manganese 3-methoxy N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine chloride], have been reported to possess combined superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase mimetic functions. Because of this SOD/catalase mimicry, EUK-8 and EUK-134 have been investigated as possible therapeutic a...

Six transition metal-salen complexes (metal = Fe, Mn and Cr) 1-6 have been synthesized and characterized using different spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques. The binding studies of natural antioxidant, curcumin with the complexes (1-6) have been carried out by electronic absorption spectroscopic technique. The substantial shift in the absorption maximum of complexes (1-6) when they bin...

Catechol-functionalized (salen)Mn complexes can be supported on mesoporous anodized aluminium oxide disks to yield catalytic membranes that are highly active in the enantioselective epoxidation of olefins when being deployed in a forced-through-flow reactor.

Currently only docetaxel has been approved to be used in the chemotherapy of prostate cancer and new drugs are urgent need. Salen-Mn is a novel type of synthetic reagent bionic and exerts remarkable anticancer activities. However, the effect of Salen-Mn on human prostate cancer has not been elucidated yet. In this study, we found that treatment of PC-3 and DU145 human prostate cancer cells with...

A new water-soluble, salen [salen = bis(salicylidene) ethylenediamine]-based ligand, 3 was developed. Two of the metal complexes of this ligand, i.e., 3a, [Mn(III)] and 3b, [Ni(II)], in the presence of cooxidant magnesium monoperoxyphthalate (MMPP) cleaved plasmid DNA pTZ19R efficiently and rapidly at a concentration approximately 1 microM. In contrast, under comparable conditions, other metal ...

A new Mn(Salen) complex bearing an ureido group as an auxiliary that is three-dimensionally fixed by a cyclopentane ring fused to the Salen structure was developed. This compound exhibited considerably higher catalase-like activity than the original Mn(Salen), i.e., the cyclopentane-fused Mn(Salen) without the auxiliary, under near-physiological conditions.

The previously developed enantioselective iodocyclization of gamma-hydroxy-cis-alkenes required 30 mol% of (R,R)-salen-Co(II) complex as chiral catalyst and 0.75 equivalent of N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS) as activator to produce 2-substituted tetrahydrofurans with 61 to 90% ee. Due to the considerable loading amount of the Co(II) complex, another more effective catalyst was pursued by screening (R...
