In all cases, three specimens were examined from each patient. Wet preparation of faeces in saline and in iodine were carried out. The preparations were screened for ova, cyst and trophozoites of protozoa. A modified zinc sulphate flotation technique! was used to concentrate faecal ova and cyst. Faecal smears were then fixed and stained in trichrome for further identification of the parasites.
Microsporidia are intracellular parasites that cause opportunistic infections in humans of various immunological status. Only a few case reports exist on microsporidial infection in solid organ transplant recipients worldwide. The presented study demonstrates the first case in Poland of Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection in a liver transplant patient. Parasites were diagnosed in stool samples us...
A rapid trichrome stain procedure was evaluated. It saves considerable time, especially when only a few slides are stained, and allows for the accurate identification of amoebae and other fecal parasites.
We undertook a study to evaluate Streck tissue fixative (STF) as a substitute for formalin and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in fecal preservation. A comparison of formalin, PVA, (mercuric chloride based), and STF was done by aliquoting fecal samples into each fixative. Stool specimens were collected in Haiti, and parasites included Cyclospora cayetanensis, Giardia intestinalis, Entamoeba coli, Iodam...
2 Adnexal Service, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, UK ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to develop a method of visualising the septa that divide the retrobulbar fat body in the human orbit. Epoxy resin embedding has previously been used to visualise the branching pattern of the intra-orbital arteries. Creating a 3D reconstruction of the orbital septa would elucidate the detailed structure an...
in this report we are going to discuss the following subjects: 1. indications of muscle biopsy in which situation it can not be helpful. 2. how to take a muscle biopsy? 3. how a muscle biopsy should be operated? 4. which techniques do we need to read and interpret a muscle biopsy histologically (h & e staining, histochemical study, electron microscopy). 5. muscle disease histopathologic changes...
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder in which abdominal pain is associated with a defect or a change in bowel habits. Subtle inflammation, especially after infectious enteritis, has been sometimes suspected as one mechanism of pathogenesis. This research was performed (1) to evaluate the prevalence of parasitic infections and (2) the possible association of IBS and para...
Objectives: Fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial complex comprise of a diverse, interesting and challenging group of conditions that pose difficulties in classification and treatment. The two most confused benign fibro-osseous lesions are fibrous dysplasia and ossifying fibroma. Sometimes, the classic clinical, radiologic or pathologic features of fibrous dysplasia or ossifying fibroma may...
Some techniques available at our laboratory were tested for their ability to aid in the morphological diagnosis of hydatid elements (Echinococcus granulosus ["Taenia echinococcus"]) isolated from cysts in humans and sheep. Unstained, methanol-fixed hooklets were fluorescent, most starkly so under violet light (excitation filter wavelength, 405 nm; long-pass filter wavelength, 495 nm). Auramine-...
UNLABELLED Rheumatoid myositis (RM) is still poorly characterized, albeit the concept of muscle involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is well-recognized as being driven by a wide range of causes including inflammation, drugs, impaired joint flexibility, sedentarism. OBJECTIVE To describe clinical, serological, imaging and histological pattern of RM. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a retros...
