Atypical Mycobacterium granulomatous skin infections are often accured by Mycobacterium marinum, M. ulcerans, M. fortuitum, and M. avium colonies. Skin infections probably originate from an environmental source such as contacting with aquatic animals, fish farming and swimming in the pools, and inoculate into skin through skin wounds, scratches, trauma, and surgery. The lesions appear as purple...

BACKGROUND Mycobacterioses in animals cause economical losses and certain Mycobacterium avium subspecies are regarded as potential zoonotic agents. The evaluation of the zoonotic risk caused by M. avium subspecies requires information about the quantities of Mycobacterium strains in infected animals. Because M. avium subspecies in pig tissues are difficult or even impossible to quantify by cult...

background and objectives: diagnosis of avian tuberculosis by conventional culture method is still considered as the “gold standard” technique. the main objective of this study was to compare growth of mycobacterium avium subsp. avium on four specific mycobacterial cultures such as glycerinated lowenstein-jensen medium, pyruvate-enriched lowenstein- jensen medium, mycobactin j-supplemented herr...

Significant resistance against influenza virus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections was induced when trehalose dimycolate from M. tuberculosis or M. bovis but not M. avium was combined with muramyl dipeptide. Trehalose dimycolate from M. tuberculosis, in contrast to that from M. avium, could confer resistance against Toxoplasma gondii infections.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients are known to have an increased tendency for developing opportunistic infections. However, there are no reports of simultaneous lymph node involvement of cytomegalovirus and Mycobacterium avium complex in a human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient. We report a 31-year-old man who presented with acute abdominal pain and tenderness and weight loss. ...

An assay that is based on the amplification of 16S rRNA sequences and that was initially developed to detect Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in cattle was used to test 20 serotypes of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) and atypical mycobacterial species not belonging to MAC. Only serotypes 1 to 6 and 8 to 11, designated M. avium, were detected by the assay, indicating that it can be used for ...

Bacteria within the Mycobacterium avium complex are prominent in the environment and are a source of serious disseminated infections in patients with AIDS. Serovars of the M. avium complex are distinguished from all other mycobacteria and from one another by the presence of highly antigenic glycolipids, the glycopeptidolipids, on their surfaces. A genomic library of DNA from serovar 2 of the M....

One of the most important opportunistic pathogens associated with AIDS is the Mycobacterium avium complex. M. avium infections are found in up to 70% of individuals in advanced stages of AIDS. The deficiency in our knowledge of these mycobacteria presents an obstacle to the development of a rational approach for controlling these life-threatening infections in immunocompromised persons. It is a...

High numbers of mycobacteria, including known pathogenic species such as Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, and Mycobacterium chelonae, were recovered from aerosols produced by pouring commercial potting soil products and potting soil samples provided by patients with pulmonary mycobacterial infections. The dominant mycobacteria in the soil samples corresponded to the dominant s...
