Mycobacterium marinum, a relatively rapid-growing fish and human pathogen, has become an important model for the investigation of mycobacterial pathogenesis. M. marinum is closely related to the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and causes a disease in fish and amphibians with pathology similar to tuberculosis. We have developed an in vitro model for the study of M. marinum virulence mechanism...
Mycobacterium marinum is a pathogenic mycobacterial species that is closely related to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and causes tuberculosis-like disease in fish and frogs. We infected the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster with M. marinum. This bacterium caused a lethal infection in the fly, with a 50% lethal dose (LD(50)) of 5 CFU. Death was accompanied by widespread tissue damage. M. marinum ini...
Comparison of the cellular fatty acids of 10 strains of Mycobacterium marinum and 35 strains of Mycobacterium kansasii revealed similarities within each species but differences between these two photochromogenic mycobacteria. A branched-chain fatty acid characteristic of M. kansasii was found in trace amounts in 2 of the 10 strains of M. marinum.
An episode of serial mortality occurred in a population wild-caught, aquarium-reared sharphead flyingfish Hirundichthys oxycephalus. ?Most diseased fish had ulcerative hemorrhagic lesions on the skin, especially head, and displayed multiple, fine, whitish nodules scattered internal organs, including kidney, spleen liver. ?Histopathological examination revealed to be granulomatous consisting epi...
Mycobacterium marinum is a close relative of the obligate human pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. As with M. tuberculosis, M. marinum causes intracellular infection of poikilothermic vertebrates and skin infection in humans. It is considered a valid model organism for the study of intracellular pathogenesis of mycobacteria. Low transformation efficiencies for this species have precluded appr...
background: mycobacterium marinum infection has a worldwide distribution and the organism occupies many aquatic environments. infections in human consist of nodular cutaneous lesions that can progress to tenosynovitis, arthritis, and osteomyelitis. case presentation: a 27-year-old man was presented with a history of swelling and exudative erythematous lesions and pustules of the right forearm. ...
Mycobacterium marinum, a causative agent of fish tuberculosis, is one of the most closely related Mycobacterium species (outside the M. tuberculosis complex) to M. tuberculosis, the etiologic agent of human tuberculosis. Signature-tagged mutagenesis was used to identify genes of M. marinum required for in vivo survival in a goldfish model of mycobacterial pathogenesis. Screening the first 1008 ...
Both in vivo and in vitro, Mycobacterium marinum organisms were found to multiply within phagolysosomes of murine macrophages. It thus appears that M. marinum are neither killed nor inhibited from multiplying by lysosomal enzymes.
