The development of protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines has had a major impact on Haemophilus influenzae type b disease. The application of this technology to Neisseria meningitidis is also striking, particularly for serogroup C. However, significant challenges exist for the development of vaccines against non-typeable H. influenzae and against N. meningitidis serogroup B. Issues such as n...

Invasive Neisseria meningitidis infection is rare but carries a high mortality rate. The carriage rate in the normal population is around 10% and can be higher in confined populations. A study on the prevalence of carriage of N. meningitidis was conducted among 3195 army recruits after 2 months of intensive training in an army camp. N. meningitidis was isolated from 37.0% of these recruits. Two...

During periods of endemic meningococcal disease, serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis is responsible for a significant percentage of invasive diseases, and no particular clone or strain predominates (F. E. Ashton and D. A. Caugant, Can. J. Microbiol. 47: 293-289, 2001), However, in the winter of 2004 to 2005, a cluster of serogroup B meningococcal disease occurred in one region in the province of...

Serogroup B Neisseria meningitidis is a frequent cause of invasive meningococcal disease, yet there are no effective vaccines suitable for routine immunisation. Limited efficacy has been shown with meningococcal outer membrane vacccines in children 4 years and older. Here we review the status of current research and consider new approaches to development of meningococcal serogroup B vaccines.

conclusions the results showed that the extracted omvs were conformationally stable, and there were no pyrogenic determinants in omv. also the results showed that the omv elicited high level of specific antibodies against n. meningitidis serogroup a. these results indicate that the omv obtained here, can be used as a meningococcal vaccine after further investigation. materials and methods omvs ...

We have developed a novel Neisseria meningitidis serogroup-specific loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for six of the most common meningococcal serogroups (A, B, C, W, X, and Y). The assay was evaluated using a set of 31 meningococcal LAMP assay positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from 1574 children with suspected meningitis identified in prospective surveillance betwe...

A native outer membrane vesicles (NOMV) vaccine was developed from three antigenically diverse strains of Neisseria meningitidis that express the L1,8, L2, and L3,7 lipooligosaccharide (LOS) immunotypes, and whose synX, and lpxL1 genes were deleted.. Immunogenicity studies in mice showed that the vaccine induced bactericidal antibody against serogroups B, C, W, Y and X N. meningitidis strains. ...

Serum samples from children immunized with a meningococcal serogroup B vaccine demonstrated potent serum bactericidal antibody activity against the hypervirulent Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W strain circulating in England. The recent introduction of this vaccine into the United Kingdom national immunization program should also help protect infants against this endemic strain.

Meningococcal disease occurs as sporadic cases in developed countries, with the occasional emergence of new clones of Neisseria meningitidis. Here, we report the genome sequence of N. meningitidis strain LNP27256, an isolate of sequence type 11 linked to a recent outbreak among men who have sex with men in Europe.
