purpose: to report the clinical, confocal scan, and histopathologic features of bilateral nocardia keratitis following photorefractive keratectomy (prk). case report: a 23-year-old girl underwent simultaneous bilateral prk for myopia. on the third postoperative day, dense central infiltrates mainly involving the anterior stroma were noticed in both eyes. clinical and confocal scan features were...
BACKGROUND The incidence rate of Nocardia keratitis is increasing, with new species identified thanks to molecular methods. We herein report a case of Nocardia transvalensis keratitis, illustrating this emerging pathology among travellers returning from Asia. CASE PRESENTATION A 23-year-old man presented with a 10-week history of ocular pain, redness, and blurred vision in his right eye follo...
Keratitis due to Nocardia farcinica occurred in a 49-year-old female after inappropriate cleaning of her semipermeable rigid contact lenses with basin-stored water during a holiday in France. N. farcinica was differentiated from Nocardia asteroides by its growth at 45 degrees C, acid production from rhamnose, its opacification of Middlebrook 7H10 agar, and its marked degree of resistance to all...
Nocardia asteroides is a rare cause of keratitis usually associated with trauma. We report a case of corneal ulceration caused by N. asteroides in a patient with leprosy. This is the first case report of nocardial keratitis from Southeast Asia. The diminished corneal sensation in a patient with leprosy could be a predisposing factor for development or exacerbation of corneal ulceration.
Nocardia keratitis occurred in 4 eyes of 3 patients (2 women and 1 man) who had photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) by the same surgeon at the same center. Two eyes of the first 2 patients required lamellar keratectomy to debulk the involved stroma and obtain specimens for microbiological and histopathological evaluation. Light microscopic examination disclosed gram-positive and acid-fast filamen...
Problems in management of ulcerative keratitis may arise from delays in diagnosis and from inadequate response to treatment. In the present case, a corneal injury was followed by Nocardia asteroides keratitis. The organism isolated was sensitive in vitro to both sulphonamides and penicillin, but there was no satisfactory clinical improvement with sulphonamides alone. Good response to treatment ...
AIMS To determine the sensitivity, specificity and predictive values of potassium hydroxide (KOH) wet mount, Gram stain, Giemsa stain and Kinyoun's acid-fast stain in the diagnosis of infective keratitis. METHODS A retrospective analysis of all patients with clinically diagnosed infective keratitis presenting between September 1999 and September 2002 was carried out. Corneal scrapes were take...
