The purpose of this study was to examine the activity of liposomal nystatin against a disseminated Aspergillus fumigatus infection in neutropenic mice. Mice were made neutropenic with 5-fluorouracil and were administered the antifungal drug intravenously for 5 consecutive days beginning 24 h following infection. Liposomal nystatin, at doses as low as 2 mg/kg of body weight/day, protected neutro...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to design and evaluate novel functional chitosan hydrogels (chitosan-H-propolis, chitosan-H-propolis-nystatin and chitosan-H-nystatin) by using the chitosan-H polymer as "dual function restorative materials". MATERIALS AND METHODS The nystatin/antioxidant carrier gel was prepared by dispersion of the corresponding component in glycerol and 3% acetic acid...

in this study, nystatin liposomal formulation was prepared and characterized. the physicochemical properties of formulations including vesicle size, drug entrapment stability and in vitro release were studied. the highest entrapment efficiency of nystatin into liposomes was obtained about 70% when cholesterol (cho) was added to the formulations prepared with dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine. in a...

The selectivity of the antibiotic nystatin towards ergosterol compared to cholesterol is believed to be a crucial factor in its specificity for fungi. In order to define the structural features of sterols that control this effect, nystatin interaction with ergosterol-, cholesterol-, brassicasterol- and 7-dehydrocholesterol-containing palmitoyloleoylphosphocholine vesicles was studied by fluores...

BACKGROUND Candida species (sp) is implicated in causing opportunistic disseminated mycotic complications in stage II HIV patients. Cleistopholis patens is a West African medicinal tree reported to have significant antifungal activity against C. albicans. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the anti-candidal activity of methanolic leaf extract of Cleistopholis patens against Candida spec...

The cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum is normally susceptible to the action of the polyene antibiotic nystatin. We describe conditions under which transient nystatin resistance can be induced in the absence of detectable changes in sterol composition. These results suggest that nystatin plays a positive role in promoting resistance to itself.

A convenient standard microbiological potency determination test for the antidandruff shampoos was developed by adopting the pharmacopoeial microbiological assay procedure of the drug nystatin. A standard curve was drawn consisting of the inhibition zone diameters vs. logarithm of nystatin concentrations in international units using the fungus Saccharomyces cerevisiae (yeast) strain National Co...

Polyene macrolides are important antibiotics used to treat fungal infections in humans. In this work, acyltransferase (AT) domain swaps, mutagenesis, and cross-complementation with heterologous polyketide synthase domain (PKS) loading modules were performed in order to facilitate production of new analogues of the polyene macrolide nystatin. Replacement of AT(0) in the nystatin PKS loading modu...
