Sustainable methods are needed to recycle precious metals and synthesize catalytic nanoparticles. Palladium nanoparticles can be produced via microbial reduction of soluble Pd(II) to Pd(0), but in previous tests using dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB), the nanoparticles were closely associated with the cells, occupying potential reductive sites and eliminating the potential for cell ...

The exceptional activity for methane combustion of modular palladium-ceria core-shell subunits on silicon-functionalized alumina that was recently reported has created renewed interest in the potential of core-shell structures as catalysts. Here we report on our use of advanced ex situ and in situ electron microscopy with atomic resolution to show that the modular palladium-ceria core-shell sub...

Biomolecular templates provide an excellent potential tool for bottom-up device fabrication. Self-assembling alpha-synuclein protein fibrils, the formation of which has been linked to Parkinson's disease, have yet to be explored for potential device fabrication. In this paper, alpha-synuclein fibrils were used as a template for palladium (Pd), gold (Au) and copper (Cu) nanoparticle chains synth...

Electrophoretic deposition of palladium nanoparticles prepared by the reverse micelle technique onto InP substrates is addressed. We demonstrate that the substrate pre-deposition treatment and the deposition conditions can extensively influence the morphology of the deposited palladium nanoparticle films. Schottky diodes based on these films show notably high values of the barrier height and of...

A palladium nanoparticle decorated carbon nanotube was designed as a label for preparation of a highly sensitive disposable immunosensor. The immunosensor was constructed by assembling the capture antibody on gold nanoparticles decorated graphene nanosheets modified screen printed carbon working electrode. With a sandwich immunoassay mode, the palladium nanoparticle decorated carbon nanotubes w...

Palladium nanohexagons were prepared using a seed-mediated method. Their catalytic performance in 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol hydrogenation was compared to the one of monodispersed Pd nanospheres. Quantitative correlations between initial turnover frequencies (TOFs) and nanoparticle surface compositions showed independence of TOFs calculated per atoms on Pd(111) facets on particle size and shape.

Hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel, is of key importance to various industrial applications, including fuel cells and in the aerospace and automotive industries. However, hydrogen gas is odorless, colorless, and highly flammable; thus appropriate safety protocol implementation and monitoring are essential. Highly sensitive hydrogen leak detection and surveillance sensor systems are needed; addition...

Novel dual-porous carbon-supported palladium nanoparticle (Pd NP) catalysts were prepared by sequential carbonization and reduction of microporous organic polymer-encaged PdCl2. The diverse pore structure of microporous organic polymers provides a reservoir for the palladium precursors and prevents Pd NPs from sintering during the carbonization and reaction. The microporous structure has a sign...

Palladium nanoparticles offer an attractive alternative to bulk palladium for catalysis, hydrogen storage and gas sensing applications. Their performance depends strongly on surface structure; therefore, nanoparticle coalescence can play an important role, as it determines the resultant structure of the active sites where reactions (e.g. catalysis) actually take place, i.e. facets, edges, verti...

The sonochemical synthesis of stable palladium nanoparticles has been achieved by ultrasonic irradiation of palladium(II) nitrate solution. The starting solutions were prepared by the addition of different concentrations of palladium(II) nitrate in ethylene glycol and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). The resulting mixtures were irradiated with ultrasonic 50 kHz waves in a glass vessel for 180 min....
