Abstract: Some people automatically and involuntarily ”see” mental images of numbers in spatial arrays when they think of numbers. This phenomenon, called number forms, shares three key characteristics with the other types of synaesthesiae, within-individual consistency, between-individual variety, and mixture of regularity and randomness. An experiment was conducted to investigate whether ment...

Over the years a number of powerful people detectors have been proposed. While it is standard to test complete detectors on publicly available datasets, it is often unclear how the di erent components (e.g. features and classi ers) of the respective detectors compare. Therefore, this paper contributes a systematic comparison of the most prominent and successful people detectors. Based on this e...

In this paper we give a new approach to the concepts of glyph and character, applied to the study of the Unicode encoding. After a thorough discussion of these two concepts, we describe the other fundamental ingredients of the encoding: privileged glyphs, character descriptions, combining characters, and properties. In each case we try to show the importance of the given notion and at the same ...

Losses from the proton and antiproton beams of the Fermilab Tevatron have been shown to produce a halo which contribute to backgrounds to physics signals in the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). To provide a measure of the beam halo and losses, we have installed arrays of scintillation counters on both sides of the CDF detector. We describe here the physical configuration of these counters, ...

Let M be a simply connected complex submanifold of C . We prove that M is irreducible, up a totally geodesic factor, if and only if the normal holonomy group acts irreducibly. This is an extrinsic analogue of the well-known De Rham decomposition theorem for a complex manifold. Our result is not valid in the real context, as it is shown by many counter-examples.

Since their inception, social networking sites (SNSs) have experienced exponential growth. While substantial research has been dedicated to users’ initial adoption of SNSs, the fall of MySpace reminds us that the long-term success of SNSs depends on users’ post adoption staying power. Inspired by this, this work-in-progress investigates users’ “stickiness” with a specific SNS. Based on Li et al...

This paper reports on an empirical investigation of the relationship between print and hypertext reading skills. Subjects in the study were university students at a public Midwestern university. A repeated-measures, counter-balanced design was employed. Subjects were categorized as highand low-ability readers based on a standardized measure of reading achievement. Experimental tasks required su...

Content contribution from individuals is critical to the viability of online communities. In this study we identify the factors that are associated with the quantity and the quality of content sharing in a photo sharing community, where the act of content creation is decoupled from the act of content sharing. We draw on theories of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and find that the prospect ...

This paper addresses the problem of the evaluation of people counting systems. The relation between the real people number and the output of the people counting system is used to motivate the computation of the maximum number of people as a scenario and geometry specific quantity which supports the evaluation of the system output. Based on the camera field-of-view we determine the maximum numbe...
