Background: Novel approaches using virtual computed tomography (CT) guidance, namely electromagnetic navigation transthoracic needle biopsy (EMN-TTNB), enable physicians to perform percutaneous lung biopsies. However, there are very few studies on the clinical experiences of EMN-TTNB, and in previous studies, procedure was usually performed under deep sedation. This study aimed determine diagno...
BACKGROUND Previous studies identifying risk factors for pneumothorax in percutaneous core needle lung biopsies reported inconsistent and contradictory results. OBJECTIVES We aimed to identify independent risk factors for pneumothorax associated with computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous core needle lung biopsy (PCNB). PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 591 biopsy proce...
Small lung nodules undiagnosed by percutaneous needle biopsy have traditionally gone to thoracotomy for diagnosis. We describe a technique using computed tomographic needle/wire lung localization of these nodules, to be resected using video-assisted thoracoscopy. This is less invasive and less painful than thoracotomy and provides for cost-effective definitive diagnosis.
Coaxial technique is extensively applied to facilitate percutaneous lung lesion biopsy. However, the impact of coaxial technique on diagnostic accuracy remains undecided. We reviewed 485 patients who underwent percutaneous CT-guided needle biopsies of lung lesions in our hospital. All of these biopsies were performed using either a cutting needle alone (n = 268) or a cutting needle combined wit...
INTRODUCTION Most patients referred for lung biopsy have a focal lesion that is likely to be a carcinoma and fine needle aspiration (FNA) is usually sufficient to confirm diagnosis. Percutaneous cutting needle biopsy (CNB) is an important and potential diagnostic technique when non carcinomatous disease is suspected or when the pulmonary disease is unclear, so tissue architecture is very import...
BACKGROUND Systemic air embolism is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of percutaneous computed tomography (CT)-guided lung biopsy. The incidence might be underestimated because of failure to diagnose this adverse event in asymptomatic patients; early recognition is difficult. CASE PRESENTATION We report the case of a 73-year-old man with systemic air embolism, a complicatio...
UNLABELLED The approach to the diagnosis and management of patients with diffuse infiltrative lung disease (DILD) is controversial. The results of transbronchial biopsy are often unsatisfactory. The role of open lung biopsy is highly variable. Percutaneous cutting needle biopsy (CNB) is not recommended because of its reported high morbidity/mortality relative to its low diagnostic yield. We rep...
BACKGROUND This article aims to comprehensively describe indications, contraindications, technical aspects, diagnostic accuracy and complications of percutaneous lung biopsy. METHODS Imaging-guided biopsy currently represents one of the predominant methods for obtaining tissue specimens in patients with lung nodules; in many cases treatment protocols are based on histological information; thu...
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the diagnostic value of the open biopsy technique and the percutaneous biopsy techniques in lumbar spondylodiscitis. METHODS Between January 2004 and December 2009, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 57 patients with infectious lumbar spondylodiscitis. The etiologic diagnosis of the infectious spondylodiscitis w...
