Our simple Meisenheimer model for predicting the principal site for nucleophilic substitution in aromatic perfluorocarbons is further tested on a series of recently published reactions in liquid ammonia primarily from Malykhin and coworkers. The model accurately predicts the experimental results for all of the reactions reported further confirming its general applicability.
Introduction The possibilities of using liquid instead of air in the exchange of gases have always fascinated researchers. The first studied liquid was saline solution which appeared to be unsuitable for transporting gases in normobaria. Its capacity to dissolve oxygen is low, and its viscosity and density are high as compared with air. Moreover, the introduction of saline into the lung can rem...
Blood-Contacting Surfaces In article number 2102214, Jun Ki Hong, Anna Waterhouse, Chiara Neto, and co-workers report that tethered-liquid perfluorocarbons show low adhesion of blood components. The cover image is a scanning electron micrograph revealing minimal platelets after incubation in human whole blood. bumpy background the tethered-perfluorocarbon layer which stabilizes liquid perfluoro...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) belong to the category of phototherapy and are based on the photophysical generation of either noxious reactive oxygen species, thereby inducing oxidative stress, or rather cell-hostile environmental conditions (local hyperthermia) with the general aim to destroy abnormal tissues. A great advantage of both strategies is the fact that the...
