Stokes (1) reported that the colored substance in blood carries oxygen. This was followed by Hoppe-Seyler (2), who first crystallized this substance and coined the term hemoglobin. Additionally, it was shown that the pattern of light absorption changes when shaken with air (2). Hertzman (3) described using photoelectric plethysmography of fingers and toes as a dynamic analysis of the peripheral...

BACKGROUND Finger plethysmography and thermometry are objective measures used to assess the vascular aspect of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Research to date shows poor correlation between these tests and Stockholm Workshop Scale (SWS) vascular stage. Clinicians, researchers and compensation boards require objective means to diagnose and quantify HAVS. AIMS To define the specificity and...

Klectrie impedance plethysmography has been offered as a substitute for mechanical plethysmography and would be particularly suitable for regions in which the mechanical method cannot be applied. A comparative investigation of mechanical and impedance plethysmograms, taken simultaneously from a finger or a forearm, revealed that, while the normal pulsations were reproduced reasonably well, elec...

We demonstrate by theory, as well as by ex vivo and in vivo measurements that impedance plethysmography, applied extravascularly directly on large arteries, is a viable method for monitoring various cardiovascular parameters, such as blood pressure, with high accuracy. The sensor is designed as an implant to monitor cardiac events and arteriosclerotic progression over the long term.

Noncalibrated respiratory inductance plethysmography has been used to measure respiratory function by calculation of the phase angle and, more recently, by determination of the ratio of each time to reach peak tidal expiratory flow to total expiratory time (TPEF/TE). Since TPEF/TE is known to be decreased in airway obstruction when derived from flow signals obtained by a pneumotachograph, we wa...
