health problem in China. The recently transformed industrial structure and expansion of the industrial labor force, accompanying the rapid industrialization and economic growth, pose both tremendous challenges and opportunities for occupational health policy and research. OBJECTIVES Pneumoconiosis in China remains a disease with substantial public health significance. Diagnostic standards for the pneumoconioses are based on traditional film-screen radiography (FSR). However, FSR is increasingly being replaced with digital radiographic imaging, which has become the predominant technology available in Chinese clinical practice. To evaluate the applicability of dig...
The mineral pneumoconioses (lung disease caused by inhalation of inorganic dust) have been an important disease entity for centuries. In the last several decades, the electron microscope has been used to elucidate the distribution and identification of inhaled minerals, to aid in establishing etiologic factors, and less commonly, to determine the basic biologic mechanisms through which inhaled ...
To examine risk for mycosis among persons with silicosis, we examined US mortality data for 1979-2004. Persons with silicosis were more likely to die with pulmonary mycosis than were those without pneumoconiosis or those with more common pneumoconioses. Health professionals should consider enhanced risk for mycosis for silica-exposed patients.
current sampling instruments of respirable dust (rd) may over estimate the inhaled dose by up to 400% depending on the size distribution of airborne dust. this limitation and the practice of assigning a single value for rd to all jobs regardless of the level of activity are incompatible with the advances in occupational epidemiology. a new dust sampler designed to estimate pulmonary deposition ...
