The disease known as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is a major cause of illness and death in persons with impaired immune systems. While the genus Pneumocystis has been known to science for nearly a century, understanding of its members remained rudimentary until DNA analysis showed its extensive diversity. Pneumocystis organisms from different host species have very different DNA sequenc...

Bakteriyel ve fungal infeksiyonlar COVID-19 ile birlikte görülebilir. Ayrıca, bazı infeksiyon hastalıkları infeksiyonuna bağlı pnömoni karışabilir. Bu yazıda, pnömonisi ön tanısıyla kliniğimize sevkedilen, HIV Pneumocystis jiroveci akciğer tüberkülozu tanısı konulan 60 yaşında bir erkek hasta sunuldu. Hastanın başvuru esnasındaki ateş, öksürük balgam çıkarma yakınmaları tedavisi sonrasında tama...

introduction: pneumocystis jiroveci is an opportunistic infectious fungus in immunosuppressed patients, particularly in ones with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (aids). the use of immunosuppressive drugs especially corticosteroids predisposes the transplanted patients to a variety of infectious diseases including pneumocystis infection. in many developed countries, the incidence of pneumocy...

BACKGROUND The use of immune suppressive drugs for organ transplant recipients predisposes them to opportunistic infections, especially by fungal agents. Pneumocystis jiroveci, as an opportunistic pathogen, endangers the patients' life in those with immune system disorders. Early detection of latent Pneumocystis infection in susceptible patients may help choose the optimal treatment for these p...

We have cloned and characterized the kex1 gene of Pneumocystis jiroveci. Unlike the case for Pneumocystis carinii, in which the homologous PRT-1 genes are multicopy, kex1 is a single-copy gene encoding a protein homologous to fungal serine endoproteases, which localize to the Golgi apparatus. Thus, substantial biological differences can be seen among Pneumocystis species.

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) and pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP) are life-threatening opportunistic infections that occur in immunocompromised hosts. Early diagnosis and treatment of these opportunistic infections is essential to the survival of immunocompromised patients. We report a 60-year-old man undergoing short-term steroid therapy after surgical resection of a brain tumor...

BACKGROUND Pneumocystis jiroveci (formerly Pneumocystis carinii) pneumonia (PCP) is a major cause of mortality in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected infants in Africa, but the prevalence of mutations in the gene encoding dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS) in isolates from Africa has not been reported. METHODS This study investigated the prevalence of DHPS mutations in P. jiroveci isolat...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Pneumocystis jiroveci is an important causative agent of Pneumocystis pneumonia. During childhood, exposure to Pneumocystis occurs and antibody was built in early childhood. The aim of this study was to describe the molecular epidemiology of P. jiroveci in children without any respiratory syndrome and survey the distribution of different mitochondrial large subunit, ri...

BACKGROUND The opportunistic fungus Pneumocystis jiroveci is a common cause of respiratory infection in immunocompromised patients. By contrast, pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) occurs only rarely in immunocompetent individuals. Asymptomatic colonisation with P jiroveci has recently been described in patients who are either minimally immunosuppressed or who have underlying lung disorders such as br...

BACKGROUND Patients with solid malignant tumours are at increased risk of Pneumocystis jiroveci infection from immunosuppression as a result of chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy, but active Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) in untreated lung cancer is uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION A 43-year-old woman presented with prolonged fever, progressive dyspnoea, diffuse alveolar and interstitial infiltrates. ...
