We report a case of spontaneous intramural left atrial hematoma with chest pain and pulmonary edema as the primary clinical manifestations. Echocardiographic techniques revealed obstruction of the left atrial cavity by cyst-like masses attached to the posterior and anterior atrial wall. A large intramural hematoma due to extensive atrial wall dissection was observed by magnetic resonance imagin...
The rupture of an acute dissection of the ascending aorta into the space surrounding the pulmonary artery is an uncommon occurrence. No previous cases of transient pulmonary hypertension caused by a hematoma surrounding the pulmonary artery have been documented in the literature. Herein, we report a case of acute aortic dissection presenting as secondary pulmonary hypertension.
BACKGROUND The most common complication of coronary artery perforation, a rare complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is hemopericardium with cardiac tamponade. However, localized extra-coronary bleeding can lead to epicardial hematoma, which is a rare phenomenon. We report the case of an unusual delayed presentation of post-PCI hematoma with unrecognized guidewire perforatio...
A 21-year-old man presented with acute onset of severe, ripping chest pain. He reported mild dyspnea but denied other associated symptoms, including leg swelling, palpitations , or neurological symptoms. He had a long-standing personal history of hypertension and reported a family history of venous thromboembolism and diabetes mellitus. On physical examination, the patient was tachycardic and h...
A 65-year old man presented at the emergency department with acute shortness of breath, chest pain, cough and haemoptysis. The patient is an ex-smoker with a total of 35 pack years and an extensive medical history, including a serious traffic accident with neurotrauma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, degenerative spine and hip disease, ethylism, a type A aortic dissection and atrial fibr...
TOPIC: Lung Pathology TYPE: Medical Student/Resident Case Reports INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hematoma is a known possible sequela of blunt or indirect trauma to the thorax. However, only couple cases were reported where pulmonary had formed spontaneously without an underlying etiology. Imaging frequently misleads towards malignancy even cavitation, posing difficulties in diagnosis especially with ...
Imatinib, a tyrosine-kinase inhibitor, has recently been tested to determine its safety and efficacy for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), specifically in a study entitled Imatinib in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, a Randomized, Efficacy Study (IMPRES).(1) Experimental data suggest that imatinib plays a role in controlling pulmonary vascular remodeling, and this hypothes...
Severe intrathoracic hemorrhage from pulmonary parenchyma is the most serious complication of pulmonary laceration after blunt trauma requiring immediate surgical hemostasis through open thoracotomy. The safety and efficacy of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) techniques for this life-threatening condition have not been fully evaluated yet. We report a case of pulmonary laceration wit...
Figure 1: Echocardiography showing, a large fistula with a diameter of 7 mm between the right pulmonary artery and the enlarged left atrium (A and B), CT scan showing an epidural hematoma (C). RA: right atrium; LA: left atrium; RPA: right pulmonary artery; AO: aorta; PA: pulmonary artery; RVOT: right ventricular outflow tract. Figure 2: Intraoperative view of the doubly ligated fistula between ...
