This study examined the association between remoteness and area disadvantage, and the rate of subsequent hospitalisation, in a cohort of adults released from prisons in Queensland. A baseline survey of 1267 adult prisoners within 6 weeks of expected release was prospectively linked with hospital, mortality and reincarceration records. Postcodes were used to assign remoteness and area disadvanta...

Let X be a finite set of ‘points’ and d be a metric on X which takes integral values. For any v ∈ X and t ≥ 0, we refer to the set Bt(v) = {u ∈ X : d(u, v) ≤ t} as the ball of radius t centered at v, and we denote the minimum (maximum, respectively) volume of a ball with radius t in X as V min t (V max t ). Let C ⊆ X, C 6= ∅ be a code, i.e. a set of points, which we will refer to as codewords. ...

OBJECTIVE To analyse cancer survival in New South Wales by geographic remoteness. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS A survival analysis of all patients with cancers diagnosed in NSW between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 1996. Survival was determined to 31 December 1999. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The relative excess risk (RER) of death over 5 years was estimated for each geographic remoteness ca...

A profile on a graph G is any nonempty multiset whose elements are vertices from G. The corresponding remoteness function associates to each vertex x ∈ V (G) the sum of distances from x to the vertices in the profile. Starting from some nice and useful properties of the remoteness function in hypercubes, the remoteness function is studied in arbitrary median graphs with respect to their isometr...

BACKGROUND This paper initially describes premature mortality by Aboriginality in South Australia during 1999 to 2006. It then examines how these outcomes vary across area level socio-economic disadvantage and geographic remoteness. METHODS The retrospective, cross-sectional analysis uses estimated resident population by sex, age and small areas based on the 2006 Census, and Unit Record morta...

BACKGROUND Many factors influence participation in sport and Physical Activity (PA). It is well established that socio-economic status (SES) is a critical factor. There is also growing evidence that there are differences in participation patterns according to residential location. However, little is known more specifically about the relationship of PA participation and frequency of participatio...

BACKGROUND The demographic, health and contextual factors associated with quality of life impairment are investigated in older persons from New South Wales, Australia. We examine the impact of cardiovascular and affective conditions on impairment and the potential moderating influence of comorbidity and remoteness. METHODS Data from persons aged 55 and over were drawn from two community cohor...

Let G = (V,E) be a connected graph on n vertices. Denote by l̄(G) the average distance between all pairs of vertices in G. The remoteness ρ(G) of a connected graph G is the maximum average distance from a vertex of G to all others. The aim of this paper is to show that two conjectures in [5] concerned with average distance, radius and remoteness of a graph are true.
