In this article, we explore how presidential risk orientations affect force employment decisions through an analysis of the use of unmanned weaponry during the Bush and Obama administrations. We hypothesize that the conception of risk plays an integral part in this choice of weaponry. In order to examine our hypothesis, we utilize the verbs-in-context system of operational code analysis to quan...

There is an empirical connection between deposit insurance, risktaking, and insolvency. Evidence shared at the New Delhi meeting revealed some striking similarities in experiences across settings. For example, compared to young women of similar age who did not experience sexual coercion, females who experienced coercion are more likely to experience subsequent incidents of forced sex, as well as (consensual) sexual risktaking behaviours including multiple sexual partners and non-u...

We show that nonbanks (funds, shadow banks, fintech) reduce the effectiveness of tighter monetary policy on credit supply and resulting real effects, increase risk-taking. For identification, we exploit exhaustive US loan-level data since 1990s Gertler-Karadi shocks. Higher rates shift from banks to less-regulated, more fragile nonbanks. The bank-to-nonbank largely neutralizes total associated ...

Using comprehensive corporate and retail loan data, we show that the corporate culture of banks explains their risktaking behaviour. Banks whose corporate culture leans towards aggressive competition are associated with riskier lending practices: higher approval rate, lower borrower quality, and fewer covenant requirements. Consequently, these banks incur larger loan losses and make greater con...
