Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) comprise a heterogeneous group of complex neurodegenerative diseases, characterized by the presence of progressive cerebellar ataxia, associated or otherwise with ophthalmoplegia, pyramidal signs, extrapyramidal features, pigmentary retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, cognitive dysfunction and dementia. Objective To verify the presence of cognitive dysfunction a...

Blood cell generation depends on continuous cellular output by the sequential hierarchy of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) and progenitor populations that all contain quiescent and actively cycling cells. Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) express the surface molecule Stem cell antigen 1 (SCA-1/LY6A). Using histone 2B-red fluorescent fusion protein label retention and cell-cycle repo...

The K-subspace clustering algorithm is established for sparse component analysis and overcome the difficulty that conventional SCA algorithms can not overcome. The conventional SCA algorithm can only perform single dominant SCA, can not perform multiple dominant SCA, but the proposed SCA algorithm based on K-subspace clustering can overcome this difficulty.

Mutations in the Drosophila scabrous (sca) gene affect eye and bristle development, leading to irregular spacing of ommatidia and bristle duplications in the adult fly. We have cloned the sca gene by P-element tagging. The sca transcription unit is 12 kb and consists of four exons that are joined in a 3.2-kb mRNA. In an enhancer trap screen we have isolated several P[lacZ] insertions close to t...

Background: To improve the regenerative capacity of aged individuals, we reconstituted bone marrow (BM) of aged mice with young Sca-1 cells, which repopulated cardiac progenitors and prevented cardiac dysfunction after a myocardial infarction (MI). However, the mechanisms involved were incompletely elucidated. This study aimed to investigate whether young, highly regenerative BM Sca-1 cells exe...

Although the scalene muscle (Sca) is a primary inspiratory muscle in humans, its respiratory function in other species is less clear. The electromyographic (EMG) activity of the Sca was studied during resting ventilation (eupnea) in both the awake and anesthetized hamster and after a variety of respiratory challenges in the anesthetized animal. The EMG activities of the medial Sca and the costa...

Clinical, biochemical and molecular evidence for the sickle cell anemia (SCA) crisis in Nigerian patients arising from parvovirus b19 infection remains inadequate. This study determined the prevalence and correlates of anti-parvovirus b19 antibodies in a population of SCA patients and non-SCA healthy controls in Lagos, Nigeria. In this prospective cross-sectional study, we enrolled 73 confirmed...

Ly-6A/Stem cell antigen-1 (Ly-6A/Sca-1) is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein expressed on many cell types including hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and early lymphoid-specific progenitors. Ly-6A/Sca-1 is expressed on CD4+ T cells and plays a role in regulating cellular responses to foreign antigens. The role of Ly-6A/Sca-1 in primary antibody responses has not been defined. To inv...

Alcohol abuse predisposes the host to bacterial infections. In response to bacterial infection, the bone marrow hematopoietic activity shifts toward granulocyte production, which is critical for enhancing host defense. This study investigated the hematopoietic precursor cell response to bacteremia and how alcohol affects this response. Acute alcohol intoxication was induced in BALB/c mice 30 mi...
