BACKGROUND Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is the most common vasculitis in childhood. Severe central nervous system (CNS) involvement is rare in HSP. CASE CHARACTERISTICS Three children with features of HSP presented with seizures and CNS dysfunction. OBSERVATION All three children had abnormalities on neuroimaging; 2 had complete remission but one was left with severe neurological damage. ...
Mycoplasma pneumoniae is one of the most common causes of respiratory tract infections in children. Extrapulmonary manifestations are seen in up to 25% of infected patients. Extrapulmonary complications are associated with the central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract, skin changes, myocarditis, pericarditis, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and thrombosis. The majority of extrapulmonary...
In the current report, we describe a patient with moderate nephritis and severe skin Henoch Schönlein purpura (HSP) who has been treated with rituximab. Complete and sustained skin and renal remission resulted from the treatment. Thus, further studies are required to confirm the efficacy of rituximab as first-line treatment in HSP, and it might be an interesting new therapeutic option.
The burden of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis is substantially increased by extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs). In addition to EIMs, there is very rare occurrence of autoimmunopathies like Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) in inflammatory bowel disease. HSP is an inflammatory disease damaging small vessels by immune complex depositions, and affects the skin, joint, kidneys and gastrointe...
Recent developments in relation to Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) include: a) a proposed new classification of childhood vasculitides including new classification criteria for HSP; b) the identification of various, potentially important, genetic polymorphisms in HSP that may be relevant in terms of predisposition to or protection from complications; c) evidence that prophylactic steroid at the ...
Introduction: Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is the most common vasculitis of childhood. The classic triad of HSP consists of nonthrombocytopenic purpura, arthritis/arthralgia, and gastrointestinal complaints. Pulmonary hemorrhage and cardiac involvement are rare complications of HSP. Case Report: We report the case of a 10-year-old girl with HSP complicated by both severe mitral regurgitation ...
A 61-year-old woman presented with acute lower abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and purpura on the right thigh (●" Fig.1). Urgent sigmoidoscopy revealed edema and multiple hyperemic ecchymotic lesions in the sigmoid colon and rectum (●" Fig.2), which appeared reddish on viewing with conventional white light and cyan on narrow-band imaging (NBI) (●" Fig.3). These lesions were indicative of bleed...
background: henoch-schönlein purpura (hsp) is an lga mediated small vessel systemic vasculitis disease in children. the etiology and pathogenesis of hsp disease remain unknown. however, environmental and genetic risk factors could play important roles in susceptibility to hsp disease. in this study we investigated the association of 5՛-untranslated region polymorphism (-634g/c) of vegf gene wit...
BACKGROUND Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is one of the most common vasculitides in children. It is manifested by skin purpura, arthritis, abdominal pain, renal involvement, etc. Typically, HSP is considered to be self-limiting, although renal involvement (HSP purpura nephritis, HSPN) is the principal cause of morbidity from this disease. For this reason, it is important to clarify the mechanis...
