Calcification of the interclinoid ligament (ICL) of the sella turcica, or sella turcica bridging, has been associated with severe craniofacial deviations. Despite no comprehensive study on the sella turcica bridge, a relationship with tooth and eruption disturbances has been reported. In order to investigate whether congenital absence of the second mandibular premolar, or the presence of a pala...

Introduction: Morphology of sella turcica varies with demographic factors such as gender and race. Hence, knowledge of normal sella turcica size is important for neurologists, surgeons and endocrinologists. Aim: The purpose of the study was to obtain normative data of measurements pertaining to sella turcica in an Indian populations using Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT). Materials and ...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the morphometric characteristics of the lateral bone window (LBW) of the sella turica. METHODS A descriptive anatomical study of LBW was performed in 530 cases of dry skull base specimens with relatively complete sella turcica. Detailed morphometric characteristics such as dimensions and classification of the LBW was studied. All data analysis was performed using SPSS...

Age determination of unknown dead bodies in forensic personal identification is a complicated process which involves the application of numerous methods and techniques. Skeletal remains are less exposed to influences of environmental factors. In order to enhance the accuracy of forensic age estimation additional properties of bones correlating with age are required to be revealed. Material and ...

The purpose was to compare the sella turcica morphology of individuals within pairs of monozygotic twins with normal karyotype and to analyze the similarity between the observed morphology and the morphology of non-twins at the same age with normal karyotype. Profile radiographs from 84 individuals of 42 twin pairs (18 male and 24 female pairs, aged 18-23 years) comprised the material. Sella tu...

Background: The empty sella syndrome (ESS) is a neurological or pathologic finding in which sella turcica is devoid of pituitary tissue and the subarachnoid space extends into sella turcica, which is either primary or secondary as well as partial and complete. The widespread use of CT scans and MRIs today has made the ESS a common finding in imaging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pr...

We report a 28-year-old male patient with a pituitary insufficiency after a simple fracture of the sella turcica. He was injured by a long nail that punctured the lower jaw. No fracture other than that of the sella turcica was detected. An endocrinological examination revealed both anterior and pituitary dysfunction and diabetes insipidus that continued for about two months.

The pituitary gland's role as a functional matrix for sella turcica has not been suggested in orthodontic literature. This paper is an attempt to correlate the role of pituitary gland in the development of sella turcica. A case report of dwarfism associated with hypopituitarism is presented to highlight the above hypothesis.

Since 1938, nine cases of nasopharyngeal involvement by craniopharyngioma have been described in the medical literature (1–3). Six of these cases involved the sella turcica, and all but one (1) extensively involved the sphenoid sinus. We report a case of a nasopharyngeal craniopharyngioma sparing the sella turcica. The tumor is thought to have likely arisen from the pharyngeal hypophysis. Magne...

The purpose of this study was to use quantitative methods to measure the size and shape of the sella turcica and thus establish normative reference standards that could assist in a more objective evaluation and detection of pathological conditions. Standardized lateral cephalograms of 184 healthy Greeks (91 males and 93 females) were used. The age range was between 6 and 17 years. Conventional ...
