We study the existence of optimal controls for problems governed by semilinear parabolic equations. The nonlinearities in the state equation need not be monotone and the data need not be regular. In particular, the control may be any bounded Radon measure. Our examples include problems with nonlinear boundary conditions and parabolic systems.

The probabilistic approach is used for constructing special layer methods to solve the Cauchy problem for semilinear parabolic equations with small parameter. Despite their probabilistic nature these methods are nevertheless deterministic. The algorithms are tested by simulating the Burgers equation with small viscosity and the generalized KPP-equation with a small parameter.

We study a two-species reaction-diffusion problem described by a system consisting of a semilinear parabolic equation and a first order ordinary differential equation, endowed with suitable conditions.
