We explore the generality of nanoparticle haloing as a novel colloidal stabilization mechanism in binary mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles. By selectively tuning their electrostatic interactions, both the initial microsphere stability and the role of nanoparticle additions are varied. Adsorption isotherm and zeta potential measurements indicate that highly charged na...

The state of adsorbed protein molecules can be examined by comparing the shifts in a narrow line resonance wavelength of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) whispering gallery modes (WGM) when the molecules adsorb onto a transparent microsphere that houses WGM. In adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto an aminopropyl-modified silica microsphere, the TM/TE shift ratio in...

We investigate the phase behavior and 3D structure of strongly attractive mixtures of silica microspheres and polystyrene nanoparticles. These binary mixtures are electrostatically tuned to promote a repulsion between like-charged (microsphere-microsphere and nanoparticle-nanoparticle) species and a strong attraction between oppositely charged (microsphere-nanoparticle) species. Using confocal ...

We fabricate slightly deformed fused-silica microspheres in which whispering gallery modes possess remarkably directional escape emission from the microsphere boundary. With efficient free-space excitation and collection, the lateral spatial distribution of whispering gallery modes with different azimuthal mode numbers, m, is directly observed through modal coupling and directional emission. Ex...

The major challenges in practically utilising the immense potential benefits of nanomaterials are controlling aggregation, recycling the nanomaterials, and fabricating well-defined nanoparticulate materials using innovative methods. We present a novel innovative synthetic strategy for core-shell bimetallic nanoparticles that are well-defined, ligand-free, and robustly fixed on the outermost sur...

A low cost fiber-optic micro-cavity interferometric sensor is presented. The micro-cavity is fabricated at the fiber tip by splicing a silica capillary to a single mode fiber and then heating/melting the capillary to form a microsphere with an internal air cavity. Applications of the micro-cavity sensor for temperature and traverse load measurements are demonstrated. The sensor has small size a...

We report measurements of cavity-QED effects for the radiative coupling of atoms in a dilute vapor to the external evanescent field of a whispering-gallery mode ~WGM! in a fused silica microsphere. The high Q (5310), small mode volume ~10 28 cm ), and unusual symmetry of the microcavity evanescent field enable velocity-selective interactions between fields with photon number of order unity in t...

Cascaded Raman Stokes lasing in an ultrahigh-Q silica microsphere resonator coupled to a tapered fiber is demonstrated and analyzed. With less than 900 microW of pump power near 980 nm, five cascaded Stokes lasing lines are generated. In addition, a threshold power of 56.4 microW for the first-order Stokes lasing is achieved. The Stokes lasing lines exhibit distinct characteristics depending on...
