During studies of Simuliidae at a suspected new focus of human onchocerciasis in central Brazil a new species of Simulium was found. Full descriptions of the adults and pupae of this species, S. cuasiexiguum, are described here, its affinities to closely related species in the subgenus Notolepria are discussed and its distribution in Brazil recorded.

To evaluate the impact of onchocerciasis control programmes on the annual transmission potential, it is customary to monitor the man-biting rate of vector Siniuliuin (Diptera: Simuliidae) and the number of Oizclzocerca (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) infective larvae found in them (Walsh et al., 1978). In addition to the transmission of Onchocerca volvulus (Leuckart) causing human onchocerciasis, Sim...

A brief historical overview is given of the most relevant taxonomic studies of insect groups vectors of transmissible diseases in Brazil, from the "heroic" times of the foundation of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz in Rio de Janeiro up to the present. The following orders are considered: Phthiraptera (Anoplura, Amblycera and Ischnocera), Hemiptera (Reduviidae: Triatominae), Siphonaptera and Diptera ...

BACKGROUND This paper includes 2742 specimens of 18 species of black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) collected from 132 lotic sites in Turkish Thrace, the European part of Turkey, in the early summer of 2002 and 2003 and the spring of 2005 and 2006. NEW INFORMATION All species are recorded from this region for the first time, and Metacnephianigra (Rubtsov, 1940) is a new record for Turkey. Distri...

A ten-point visual method of estimating the abundance of immature blackflies in the field is proposed and tested. The method is based on the comparison of larvae and pupae found on natural substrates, with ten diagrammatically prepared abundance classes. When estimates were based on the abundance of blackflies within a 4 x 4 cm area of highest density, there were no significant differences betw...

Taxonomically, blackflies (Simuliidae) are among the best-known aquatic insects in Brazil. However, information on their distribution is lacking for many regions. We sampled simuliids in 50 streams in the Chapada Diamantina region, State of Bahia, located in three distinct geographical areas, 20 at Lençóis, 18 at Mucugê, and 12 at Rio de Contas. We analyzed simuliid species richness and distrib...
