Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common condition encountered in surgical practice. Literature shows divers and many different etiologies for intestinal obstruction. However, bezoars are rarely reported as an etiological factor. A bezoar happens most commonly in patients with impaired gastrointestinal motility. There are four types of bezoars: phytobezoars, trichobezoars, pharmacobezoars and ...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence and risk factors for small-bowel obstruction (SBO) after certain surgical procedures. DESIGN A population-based retrospective register study. SETTING Small-bowel obstruction causes considerable patient suffering. Risk factors for SBO have been identified, but the effect of surgical technique (open vs laparoscopic) on the incidence of SBO has not been f...

Small bowel obstruction (SBO) is a common complication after abdominal surgery, and can occur due to many reasons. However, cryptorchidism can cause SBO in patients with no history of abdominal surgery. BACKGROUND The level of intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) is considered to be useful diagnostic markers of small bowel ischemia. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate whether the serum I-FABP level is a predictive marker of strangulation in patients with small bowel obstruction (SBO). METHODS A total of 37 patients diagnosed with SBO were included in this stu...

OBJECTIVES To determine the frequency of readmission for early postoperative small-bowel obstruction (SBO), to highlight factors that may predispose to this condition, to define the risks of strangulation and to compare the immediate and long-term risks and benefits of operative versus nonoperative treatment. DESIGN A chart review. SETTING The Sir Mortimer B. Davis-Jewish General Hospital, ...

BACKGROUND The management of nonstrangulating small bowel obstruction (SBO) may require surgery, but the need for and timing of surgical intervention isn't always apparent. We sought to determine whether specific features on computed tomography (CT) can predict the necessity for operative management. METHODS Two radiologists independently reviewed CT scans from all patients admitted to hospit...
