‘5”., By S RGIo DE CARVALHO T HIS PAPER PRESENTS some results of the absorption microspectroscopy of bone marrow cells in two main wave lengths: 4150 A (violet region in the Soret band) and 2650 A (UV). The first wave length is indicative of heme structures in appreciable concentration in cells.” 2 As these are only achieved as Hb, the Soret hand absorption microspectroscopy becomes specific fo...

We have prepared and isolated the peptide fragments coded for by the three exons of the human beta-globin gene, using the arginine-specific protease clostripain (EC 3.4.22.8). The region encoded by the central exon (amino acid residues 31-104) contains an arginine at position 40. This site was less susceptible to cleavage than the two sites that correspond to the exon-intron boundaries, and the...

At the expense of frequency narrowing, binary amplitude-only diffractive optical elements emulate refractive lenses without the need of large profiles. Unfortunately, they also present larger Fresnel reflection loss than conventional lenses. This is usually tackled by implementing unattractive cumbersome designs. Here we demonstrate that simplicity is not at odds with performance and we show ho...

Circular dichroism and difference ultraviolet visible spectra were obtained for cobalt hemoglobin derivatives. At 287 nm the ellipticity difference between the oxy- and deoxycobaltohemoglobin is about one-half as great as that for the native proteins indicating smaller quaternary conformational changes for the former. Deoxygenation increases the Soret rotational strengths of both iron and cobal...

Kinetics of the reaction of peroxynitrite with ferric cytochrome c in the absence and presence of bicarbonate was studied. It was found that the heme iron in ferric cytochrome c does not react directly with peroxynitrite. The rates of the absorbance changes in the Soret region of cytochrome c spectrum caused by peroxynitrite or peroxynitrite/bicarbonate were the same as the rate of spontaneous ...

Absorption spectra of several free base triarylcorroles were investigated by MCD spectroscopy. The MCD spectra exhibit unusual sign-reverse (positive-to-negative intensities in ascending energy) features in the Soret- and Q-type band regions, suggesting a rare ΔHOMO < ΔLUMO relationship between π and π* MOs in the corrole core.

Boron complexes of [14]triphyrins(2.1.1) were prepared from free-base [14]triphyrins(2.1.1) with phenylboron dichloride. The absorption spectrum of the meso-free β-alkyl-triphyrin boron complex in CH2Cl2 showed a broad weak band at around 640 nm assigned to transition from B-phenyl to the triphyrin, while that of the meso-aryl benzotriphyrin boron complex showed only Soret and Q bands.

Soret band lifetimes of the free-base tetraphenylporphine (H(2)TPP) and Cu(ii) tetraphenylporphine (Cu(II)TPP) at 408 nm have been directly measured with femtosecond (fs) resolution using the fluorescence-upconversion technique for the first time, giving tau = 68 +/- 15 and 63 +/- 15 fs, respectively, in benzene solvent.

The visible spectra of sperm-whale metmyoglobin and its fluoride, hydroxide, cyanide, azide, cyanate, formate, acetate, thiocyanate and nitrite derivatives were measured and resolved into Gaussian components. A linear correlation between the intensity of the band at 18500cm.(-1) and the magnetic susceptibility is found, suggesting that the band is the beta-band of the low-spin form. The analyse...

Fluorescence spectroscopy of the cervix has been shown to be an effective noninvasive diagnostic tool for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (precancer). To assess the effect of the menstrual cycle on fluorescence spectroscopy, daily measurements were made on ten subjects for the length of their cycle. These measurements were analyzed to determine if there was a statistically significant signal...
