Spike-frequency adaptation is known to enhance the transmission of information in sensory spiking neurons by rescaling the dynamic range for input processing, matching it to the temporal statistics of the sensory stimulus. Achieving maximal information transmission has also been recently postulated as a role for spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). However, the link between optimal plastic...

Synapse plays an important role of learning in a neural network; the learning rules which modify the synaptic strength based on the timing difference between the preand postsynaptic spike occurrence is termed as Spike Time Dependent Plasticity (STDP). The most commonly used rule posits weight change based on time difference between one presynaptic spike and one postsynaptic spike and is hence t...

Synaptic strength depresses for low, and potentiates for high activation of the postsynaptic neuron. This feature is a key property of the well-known Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro (BCM) synaptic rule, which has been shown to maximize the selectivity of the postynaptic neuron, and thereby offers a possible explanation for experience-dependent cortical plasticity such as orientation selectivity. Howev...

Bursts of activity in networks of neurons are thought to convey salient information and drive synaptic plasticity. Here we report that network bursts also exert a profound effect on Spike-Timing-Dependent Plasticity (STDP). In acute slices of juvenile rat somatosensory cortex we paired a network burst, which alone induced long-term depression (LTD), with STDP-induced long-term potentiation (LTP...

We show that standard, Hebbian spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) induces the precession of the firing phase of neurons in oscillatory networks, while anti-Hebbian STDP induces phase recession. In networks that are subject to oscillatory inhibition, the intensity of excitatory input relative to the inhibitory one determines whether the phase can precess due to STDP or whether the phase is...

In this paper, we numerically investigate two distinct phenomena, coherence resonance (CR) and self-induced stochastic (SISR), in multiplex neural networks the presence of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). The high degree CR achieved one layer network turns out to be more robust than that SISR against variations topology STDP parameters. This behavior is opposite presented by Yamakou Jo...

Shexiang Tongxin dropping pill (STDP) is a formulae of Chinese Medicine commonly used to treating angina pectoris in China. However, its mechanism of action is still yet unclear. This study investigated the roles of STDP on myocardial ischemia injury. We constructed a rat model of myocardial injury (isoproterenol subcutaneous injection, i.h, 85 mg/kg/day for 2 days), and compared among 4 groups...

Spike-timing dependent plasticity (STDP) has been implicated in visual cortex modification. We created a model of ocular dominance (OD) shift based on STDP rules and compared it to experimental results. Although STDP proved to be a powerful mechanism for OD shift in our model, we found that it was unable to account for more subtle effects of monocular deprivation.

Persistent changes in excitatory and inhibitory synaptic strengths to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine (DA) neurons in response to addictive drugs may underlie the transition from casual to compulsive drug use. While an enormous amount of work has been done in the area of glutamatergic plasticity of the VTA, little is known regarding the learning rules governing GABAergic plasticity in...
