In this paper, we use game theory to describe the emergence of self-organization and consequent pattern formation through communicative cooperation in Bacillus subtilis colonies. The emergence of cooperative regime is modelled as an n-player Assurance game, with the bacterial colonies as individual players. The game is played iteratively through cooperative communication, and mediated by exchan...
A bacterial colony on the surface of a solid medium is regarded as a grouping of cells arranged as a result of physical restrictions imposed by the surface of the medium. It is limited in size by the physical nature of, and changes occurring at, this surface (Knaysi, 1951). In a biological sense the bacterial colony is a macromorphological collection of cells rarely found in nature (Pringsheim,...
The influences of glucose, sorbitol, and NaCl in a basal enumeration medium at water activities (aw) from 0.82 to 0.97 on colony formation by sublethally heat-stressed Wallemia sebi conidia were determined. Over this aw range, glucose and sorbitol had similar effects on recovery, whereas at an aw of 0.82 to 0.92, NaCl had a detrimental effect. Colony diameters were generally largest on media co...
Bacterial colony counting is a significant technical hurdle for vaccine studies as well as various microbiological studies. We now show that an automated colony counter can process images obtained with a digital camera or document scanner and that any laboratory can efficiently have bacterial colonies enumerated by sending the images to a laboratory with a colony counter via internet.
Manual counting of bacterial colony forming units (CFUs) on agar plates is laborious and error-prone. We therefore implemented a colony counting system with a novel segmentation algorithm to discriminate bacterial colonies from blood and other agar plates.A colony counter hardware was designed and a novel segmentation algorithm was written in MATLAB. In brief, pre-processing with Top-Hat-filter...
conclusions flushing dental unit waterlines are an effective measure in reducing the number of bacterial contaminants. results bacterial contamination was found in all 24 units at the beginning of daily activity with a mean colony count of 17850. the number of colonies decreased to 3250 following 30 seconds of flushing in 16 units and later to 1837 after flushing for two minutes in 13 units. in...
