The administration of vitamin A to vitamin A-deficient rats resulted in a decreased concentration of inorganic sulfate-sulfur in the serum from a value of 2.5 mg. per cent to 1.8 mg. per cent, the latter being close to the value of 2.0 mg. per cent found in normal rats of the same age. The uptake of sulfate and phosphate by femurs and tibiae of vitamin A-deficient rats was less than that in nor...

The addition of elemental sulfur to the fermentation of Streptomyces sioyaensis in a soybean meal medium resulted in a three- to fourfold increase of siomycin. Further experiments on the effect of elemental sulfur during fermentation suggest that one of the key steps stimulating siomycin synthesis is the utilization of thiosulfate, which accumulates in the medium as the result of the oxidation ...

Sulfur-deficient SnS thin films for sodium-ion battery anode application are prepared using aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition. Growth directly onto the metal foil current collector forms sulfur-deficient microrod structures via a vapor–liquid–solid growth mechanism, with 92 nm average crystallite size and an 800 film thickness. The sulfur deficiency is demonstrated energy-dispersive X-...

Sulfur-utilizing autotrophic denitrification relies on an inorganic carbon source to reduce the nitrate by producing sulfuric acid as an end product and can be used for the treatment of wastewaters containing high levels of nitrates. In this study, sulfur-denitrifying bacteria were used in anoxic batch tests with sulfur as the electron donor and nitrate as the electron acceptor. Various medium ...

and only three incorporated inorganic sulfate into their microbial proteins when cysteine was present in the medium. One of these cultures, Lachnospira mvltiparus, incorporated about equal amounts of inorganic sulfate into glutathione and microbial protein when cysteine was present in the medium; but failed to form radioactive glutathione when S35 labeled inorganic sulfate was the only source o...

In the absence of sulfur, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular green alga, increases its rate of sulfate import and synthesizes several periplasmic proteins, including an arylsulfatase (Ars). These changes appear to help cells acclimate to a sulfur-deficient environment. The elevated rate of sulfate import results from an increase in the capacity and affinity of the transport system for sul...

The concentration of inorganic sulfate-sulfur in the serum of vitamin D-deficient rats, 2.6 to 3.5 mg. per cent, was found to be higher than that in the serum of normal rats of the same age, 2.0 mg. per cent. No change was observed following the administration of 25 gamma of vitamin D(2). In accord with the results of others, it was found that a definitely increased deposition of phosphorus in ...

S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) accumulated in cultured yeast cells and affected growth in two ways. High levels of intracellular SAM in yeast inhibited early growth, but increased growth in medium without sources of nitrogen and sulfur. Accumulated SAM in the yeast cells was recycled as a nutritional source depending on the sulfur and nitrogen contents of the medium.

Tests were made to determine the effects of inorganic and organic sulfur sources on the degradation of cellulose to methane in a chemically defined medium with sulfur-poor inoculum prepared from sewage sludge. The results show that a sulfur source of about a 0.85 mM concentration is essential for the degradation of cellulose to CH4. However, the production of CH4 from CO2 and H2 provided in the...
