We have measured the maximum field for which vortices are completely expelled from a thin-film superconducting strip. Niobium strips of width W were field cooled and imaged with a scanning Hall-probe microscope. Below a critical field B(m) approximately Phi(0)/W(2) all flux was expelled; above this field vortices were observed with a density increasing approximately linearly with field. The sma...

Single crystals of superconducting BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 were exposed to neutron irradiation in a fission reactor. The defects introduced decrease the superconducting transition temperature (by about 0.3 K) and the upper critical field anisotropy (e.g. from 2.8 to 2.5 at 22 K) and enhance the critical current densities by a factor of up to about 3. These changes are discussed in the context of simila...

The three dimensional XY model with quenched random disorder is studied in the strong screening limit, λ→ 0, by defect energy scaling at zero temperature. In zero external field we find that there exists a true superconducting phase with a stiffness exponent θ ' +1.0 for weak disorder. For low magnetic field and weak disorder, we identify an ordered Bragg glass phase which is superconducting. F...

By numerically solving models with competing superconducting and antiferromagnetic orders, we study the magnetic field dependence of the antiferromagnetic moment in both the weak and strong field regimes. Through a comparison with the neutron scattering results of Kang et al. and Matsuura et al. on Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO4, we conclude that this system is close to a SO(5) symmetric critical point. ...

The resistivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 was measured as a function of temperature, down to 25 mK and in magnetic fields of up to 16 T applied perpendicular to the basal plane. With increasing field, we observe a suppression of the non-Fermi liquid behavior, rho approximately T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state, with its characteristic rho=rho(0)+AT2 dependence. Th...

Intrinsic c-axis tunnelling in the superconducting state has been measured in zero and finite fields in small mesa structures fabricated on the surface of 2212-BSCCO single crystals. The temperature dependence of the zero-field critical current and quasi-particle conductance is related to microscopic d-wave models in the presence of impurity scattering. The strong field dependence of the c-axis...

We investigated confinement effects on the resistive anisotropy of a superconducting niobium strip with a rectangular cross section. When its transverse dimensions are comparable to the superconducting coherence length, the angle dependent magnetoresistances at a fixed temperature can be scaled as R(theta,H) = R(H/Hctheta) where Hctheta =Hc0(cos2theta + gamma(-2)sin2theta)(-1/2) is the angular ...
