A special "gustometer" has been built, which permits continuous measurement of the threshold of taste sensations. Taste sensations show strong adaptation even at the threshold level. The adaptation was much the same for the four primary tastes, but there were large individual differences. Of theoretical interest is the finding that adaptation to a taste can occur even with subliminal stimuli.

Salty taste perception affects salt intake, of which excess amounts is a major public health concern. Gene polymorphisms in salty taste receptors, zinc status and their interaction may affect salty taste perception. In this study, we examined the relationships among the α-epithelial sodium channel (αENaC) A663T genotype, zinc intake, and salty taste perception including salty taste acuity and p...

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The purpose of this study was to determine the usefulness of edible taste strips for measuring human gustatory function. STUDY DESIGN The physical properties of edible taste strips were examined to determine their potential for delivering threshold and suprathreshold amounts of taste stimuli to the oral cavity. Taste strips were then assayed by fluorescence to analyze th...

Patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency exhibit an increased taste sensitivity for sodium chloride (NaCl) (1). Treatment with carbohydrate-active steroids returns the abnormal threshold to normal levels (1). In a variety of acute and chronic debilitating diseases, a number of them exhibiting major abnormalities of water and electrolyte metabolism, taste threshold for NaCi is comparable to ...

This is a cross-sectional study design aimed to determine the prevalence of Chorda Tympani Nerve (CTN) injury and related symptoms following myringoplasty. Thirty patients were included in this study. The methods used were measuring taste thresholds using electrogustometer to map taste threshold on the anterior two-third of the tongue on the operated side with the non operated side as the contr...

We studied the salt taste change during pregnancy and investigated its meaning in normal pregnancy and preeclampsia female in salt restriction. 40 normal pregnant female, 35 pregnant female with preeclampsia and 64 healthy non-pregnant female were recruited to this study. Gustatory test was performed with the filter-paper disk method. Salt solutions, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 weight % wer...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate changes in taste threshold in patients with chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) and their relationship with body mass index. A relationship has been suggested between pediatric obesity and COME, and we hypothesized that changes in taste function may occur in children with COME and that such changes may be associated with changes in body weight. DESIGN A prospective...

Upon stimulation with continuously alternating (pulsatile) taste concentrations, humans report higher average taste intensities than for continuous stimulation with the same average tastant concentration. We investigated the effect of the magnitude of concentration changes (concentration contrast) and the effect of taste quality changes (quality contrast) between alternating tastants on sweet t...

Genetically mediated sensitivity to the bitter taste of 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) has been associated with greater acuity for bitter and for some sweet tastes. Thus far, few studies have explored the relationship between PROP taste sensitivity and hedonic responses to bitter and sweet. In this study, 87 normal-weight young women were divided into PROP non-tasters (n = 18), regular tasters (n ...
