We characterize convex cocompact subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface in terms of uniform convergence actions on the zero locus of the limit set. We also construct subgroups that act as uniform convergence groups on their limit sets, but are not convex cocompact.

The verification of the isomorphism conjectures of Baum and Connes and Farrell and Jones for certain classes of groups is used to compute the algebraic Kand L-theory and the topologicalK-theory of cocompact planar groups (= cocompact N.E.C-groups) and of groupsG appearing in an extension 1 → Zn → G → π → 1 where π is a finite group and the conjugation πaction on Zn is free outside 0 ∈ Zn. These...

We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin-Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M...

We characterize convex cocompact subgroups of mapping class groups that arise as subgroups of specially embedded right-angled Artin groups. That is, if the right-angled Artin group G < Mod(S) satisfies certain conditions that imply G is quasi-isometrically embedded in Mod(S), then a purely pseudo-Anosov subgroup H < G is convex cocompact in Mod(S) if and only if it is combinatorially quasiconve...

Lattices and parabolic subgroups are the obvious examples of cocompact subgroups of a connected, semisimple Lie group with finite center. We use an argument of C. C. Moore to show that every cocompact subgroup is, roughly speaking, a combination of these. We study a cocompact subgroup H of a connected, semisimple Lie group G with finite center. The case where H is discrete is very important and...

Let G be a topological Kac–Moody group of rank 2 with symmetric Cartan matrix, defined over a finite field Fq . An example is G = SL(2,Fq((t−1))). We determine a positive lower bound on the covolumes of cocompact lattices in G, and construct a cocompact lattice Γ0 < G which realises this minimum. This completes the work begun in Part I, which considered the cases when G admits an edge-transitiv...

We compute rationally the topological (complex) K-theory of the classifying space BG of a discrete group provided that G has a cocompact G-CW -model for its classifying space for proper G-actions. For instance word-hyperbolic groups and cocompact discrete subgroups of connected Lie groups satisfy this assumption. The answer is given in terms of the group cohomology of G and of the centralizers ...

this article presents a unified approach to the abstract notions of partial convolution and involution in $l^p$-function spaces over semi-direct product of locally compact groups. let $h$ and $k$ be locally compact groups and $tau:hto aut(k)$ be a continuous homomorphism.  let $g_tau=hltimes_tau k$ be the semi-direct product of $h$ and $k$ with respect to $tau$. we define left and right $tau$-c...
