cold hardiness is one of the most common adaptations of insects at low temperatures. to understand the cold hardiness strategy of beet armyworm, spodoptera exigua (hübner), six temperature treatments were tested on the last instar larvae. supercooling points of treatments were not significantly different. two sugars, glucose and trehalose, as well as three polyols, myo-inositol, glycerol and so...

Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) display an impressive ability to acclimate to very cold water temperatures. These fish express both anti-freeze proteins and glycerol in their plasma, liver, muscle and other tissues to avoid freezing at sub-zero temperatures. Maintenance of glycerol levels requires active feeding in very cold water. To understand how these fish can maintain activity at cold tempe...

Freezing can severely damage plants, limiting geographical distribution of natural populations and leading to major agronomical losses. Plants native to cold climates acquire increased freezing tolerance during exposure to low nonfreezing temperatures in a process termed cold acclimation. This involves many adaptative responses, including global changes in metabolite content and gene expression...

As global temperatures rise, there is a growing need to understand the physiological mechanisms that determine an organism's thermal niche. Here, we test the hypothesis that increases in mitochondrial capacity with cold acclimation and adaptation are associated with decreases in thermal tolerance using two subspecies of killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) that differ in thermal niche. We assessed...

Sugar metabolism is one of the important factors involved in winter hardiness and since the discovery of sucrose biosynthesis, considerable advances have been made in understanding its regulation and crucial role. This investigation examined the changes in activities of sucrose metabolizing enzymes and sugar content during cold hardening of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Changes in aci...

asymmetric membranes are widely used in many industrial membrane separation processes. the major advantage of membrane filtration over the conventional process is its ability to remove a wider spectrum of particles without using any chemicals. hollow fiber configuration offer many advantages over flat-sheet or tubular membranes. the spinning process of hollow fiber may look simple, yet it is te...

Rainbow trout remain active in waters that seasonally change between 4°C and 20°C. To explore how these fish are able to maintain cardiac function over this temperature range we characterized changes in cardiac morphology, contractile function, and the expression of contractile proteins in trout following acclimation to 4°C (cold), 12°C (control), and 17°C (warm). The relative ventricular mass ...

Thermal acclimation can alter cardiac function and morphology in a number of fish species, but little is known about the regulation of these changes. The purpose of the present study was to determine how cold acclimation affects zebrafish (Danio rerio) cardiac morphology, collagen composition and connective tissue regulation. Heart volume, the thickness of the compact myocardium, collagen conte...

Cold acclimation induced an increase of spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) of proton nuclear magnetic resonance in rat brown adipose tissue with concomitant increase of water content, while heat acclimation did not effect T1 of this tissue, although its water content was significantly decreased. Temperature acclimation did not affect either T1 or water content of neck muscle.

galbanum (ferula gummosa bioss) is a medicinal, commercial and industrial plant in iran but its cultivation is restricted by seed dormancy. therefore, a study was conducted to determine class and environmental requirements for breaking of seed dormancy. during imbibition study, both scarified and intact seeds exhibited similar pattern in water uptake and it seems there is not physical dormancy....
