Many complex signals, such as point distributions and textures, cannot efficiently be synthesized and stored. In this dissertation we present tile-based methods to solve this problem. Instead of synthesizing a complex signal when needed, the signal is synthesized on forehand over a small set of tiles. Arbitrary large amounts of that signal can then efficiently be generated when needed by genera...
Quality control is an important issue in the ceramic tile industry. On the other hand maintaining the rate of production with respect to time is also a major issue in ceramic tile manufacturing. Again, price of ceramic tiles also depends on purity of texture, accuracy of color, shape etc. Considering this criteria, an automated defect detection and classification technique has been proposed in ...
Providing tools that make visualization authoring accessible to visualization non-experts is a major research challenge. Currently the most common approach to generating a visualization is to use software that quickly and automatically produces visualizations based on templates. However, it has recently been suggested that constructing a visualization with tangible tiles may be a more accessibl...
Background: The natural radioactivity levels in ceramic tiles produced in Turkey were determined and the related radiological hazards were assessed. Materials and Methods: The natural radioactivity levels (226Ra, 232Th and 40K) in the ceramic tiles were measured using high-purity germanium detector system (HPGe) and the related radiological hazards were assessed by radium equivalent activity (R...
Wang Tiles are constructed from four texture samples, arranged so they can always match a choice of other tiles at two edges. Because they are precomputed, Wang Tiles are a very efficient way to generate textures on the fly. But matching problems occur within tiles and at the corners of adjacent tiles. By replacing the edge-matching texture samples with a new sample in the center of the tile, a...
The first and third authors and others [2,8,9,10,11,12] have studied sets of “tiles” (a generalization of pixels or voxels) in two and three dimensions that have a property called strong normality (SN): For any tile P , only finitely many tiles intersect P , and any nonempty intersection of these tiles must also intersect P . This paper presents extensions of the basic results about SN sets of ...
This paper discusses the use of Wang Tiles for image and texture generation as originally presented in Cohen et al. , 2003. Creating large expanses of nonperiodic texture, point distributions or geometry can be efficiently done at runtime by constructing a tiling of the plane using a small set of Wang tiles. Wang Tiles are squares whose edges are each assigned a color. The method involves filli...
We deal with compiler support for parallelizing perfectly nested loops for coarse-grain distributed memory machines. The relatively high communication start-up costs in these machines renders frequent communication very expensive. We study the eeect of clustering communication and the ensuing loss of parallelism on performance and propose a method for aggregating a number of loop iterations int...
We show that the hypercube has a face-unfolding that tiles space, and that unfolding has an edge-unfolding that tiles the plane. So the hypercube is a “dimension-descending tiler.” We also show that the hypercube cross unfolding made famous by Dali tiles space, but we leave open the question of whether or not it has an edge-unfolding that tiles the plane.
