The lithiated transition metal oxide LiVMoO6 has been synthesized by solid state reaction. This is the first report of this compound to be studied as an anode material for use in secondary batteries. The synthesized LiVMoO6 powder has been studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The electrochemical characteristics of the prepare...

Layered Li1+xV1 xO2 has attracted recent interest as a potential low voltage and high energy density anode material for lithium-ion batteries. A greater understanding of the lithium-ion transport mechanisms is important in optimising such oxide anodes. Here, stoichiometric LiVO2 and Li-rich Li1.07V0.93O2 are investigated using atomistic modelling techniques. Lithium-ion migration is not found i...

Molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) is a carbon-free, electrochemical technique to decompose a metal oxide directly into liquid metal and oxygen gas. From an environmental perspective what makes MOE attractive is its ability to extract metal without generating greenhouse gases. Hence, an inert anode capable of sustained oxygen evolution is a critical enabling component for the technology. To this e...

A new type of bottom-emission electroluminescent device is described in which a metal oxide is used as the electron-injecting contact. The preparation of such a device is simple. It consists of the deposition of a thin layer of a metal oxide on top of an indium tin oxide covered glass substrate, followed by the solution processing of the light-emitting layer and subsequently the deposition of a...

Garnet-type solid-state electrolytes have attracted extensive attention due to their high ionic conductivity, approaching 1 mS cm-1, excellent environmental stability, and wide electrochemical stability window, from lithium metal to ∼6 V. However, to date, there has been little success in the development of high-performance solid-state batteries using these exceptional materials, the major chal...

An aluminum metal, both native and with a very thin oxide film, was investigated as an anode for aluminum-ion batteries. Investigations were carried out in an acidic ionic liquid electrolyte, composed of AlCl3 in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIm]Cl), with β-MnO2/C as a cathode. The battery based on Al metal with a very thin oxide film showed high capacity and stable surface corrosion.

Although the presence of an oxygen reservoir (OR) is assumed in many models that explain resistive switching of resistive random access memory (ReRAM) with electrode/metal oxide (MO)/electrode structures, the location of OR is not clear. We have previously reported a method, which involved the use of an AFM cantilever, for preparing an extremely small ReRAM cell that has a removable bottom elec...

Nickel oxide (NiO) as one of the anode electrode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) has attracted considerable research attention. However, the poor electron conductivity and bad capacity retention performance greatly hinder its wide application. Herein, we prepared a novel three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous graphene@NiO@carbon composite via a simple solvothermal process, in whi...

A composite made from hollow polyhedron copper oxide and graphene oxide was synthesized by sintering a Cu-based metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) embedded with exfoliated graphene oxide. As a proof-of-concept application, the obtained Cu(ox)-rGO materials were used in a lithium-ion battery and a sodium-ion battery as anode materials. Overall, the Cu(ox)-rGO composite delivers excellent electroch...

Binary transition metal oxides have been regarded as one of the most promising candidates for high-performance electrodes in energy storage devices, since they can offer high electrochemical activity and high capacity. Rational designing nanosized metal oxide/carbon composite architectures has been proven to be an effective way to improve the electrochemical performance. In this work, the (Co,M...
