Chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) belongs to the large superfamily of G protein-coupled receptors. The EST sequence of CXCR4 from turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) was obtained from a subtractive cDNA library. In the present study, the full-length cDNA sequence of turbot CXCR4 was obtained, and sequence analysis indicated that its primary structure was highly similar to CXCR4 from other vertebrates. ...

Of more than 400 bacteria isolated from turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), 89 have previously been shown to inhibit the in vitro growth of the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential of seven of these strains, as well as of intestinal isolates (four strains) from a closely related fish, dab (Limanda limanda), for colonizing farmed turbot as a ...

The turbot is a flatfish (Pleuronectiformes) with increasing commercial value, which has prompted active genomic research aimed at more efficient selection. Here we present the sequence and annotation of the turbot genome, which represents a milestone for both boosting breeding programmes and ascertaining the origin and diversification of flatfish. We compare the turbot genome with model fish g...

This work assesses the present knowledge on Pacific oyster sperm biology in comparison to two marine fish species (turbot and seabass) whose sperm characteristics are well described. Sperm morphology mainly differs by the presence of an acrosome in Pacific oyster which is absent in both fish species. In turbot as in Pacific oyster, a sperm ‘maturation process’ along the genital tract is observe...

The first outbreak of dlsease due to an atyplcal Aeromonas salmonicida among turbot Scophthalmus maximus (L . ) in Denmark is reported. The causal organism was oxidase-negative, non-pigmented, and slow-growing. Additionally it differed from the typical strains in a number of biochemical characters. The mortality among turbot in the farm was high but was responsive to antlmlcrobial therapy.

BACKGROUND The turbot (Scophthalmus maximus; Scophthalmidae; Pleuronectiformes) is a flatfish species of great relevance for marine aquaculture in Europe. In contrast to other cultured flatfish, very few genomic resources are available in this species. Aeromonas salmonicida and Philasterides dicentrarchi are two pathogens that affect turbot culture causing serious economic losses to the turbot ...

Experimental horizontal transmission of nervous necrosis virus (NNV) originating from halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus was studied through cohabitation of intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected fish with uninfected fish for 125 d. The experimental groups consisted of i.p. injected turbot Scophthalmus maximus or i.p. injected Atlantic salmon Salmo salar with turbot, salmon or Atlantic cod Gadus morh...

Fish sex determination (SD) systems are varied, suggesting evolutionary changes including either multiple evolution origins of genetic SD from nongenetic systems (such as environmental SD) and/or turnover events replacing one genetic system by another. When genetic SD is found, cytological differentiation between the two members of the sex chromosome pair is often minor or undetectable. The tur...

1. Diets containing graded levels of pyridoxine hydrochloride (to supply 0.26--30 mg pyridoxine/kg) were given to seven duplicate groups of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) for 12 weeks and their growth rate was measured during this period. 2. Good growth was obtained on all treatments except those groups given less than 1.0 mg pyridoxine/kg diet. These fish grew normally until weeks 8--10 but the...

This report describes the cloning, characterization and gene expression pattern of two Th17 cytokines, interleukin (IL)-17A/F and -22, in turbot Scophthalmus maximus. The turbot IL-17A/F cDNA contains a 516 bp open reading frame encoding a deduced IL-17A/F protein of 171 amino acid (aa) residues, containing a predicted signal peptide of 31 aa. Turbot IL-22 had a 564 bp ORF coding for a 187 aa p...
