A method for generation of the modified spectrum autointerferometric correlation that allows single-shot pulse characterization is demonstrated. A sensitive graphical representation of the ultrashort pulse phase quality is introduced that delineates the difference between the presence of temporal and spectral phase distortions. Using these schemes, full-field reconstruction of ultrashort laser ...

The absolute time-dependent nonlinear response of O2, N2, N2O, and Ar to intense nonionizing, ultrashort optical pump pulses is measured with single-shot spectral interferometry. The instantaneous and delayed rotational responses are distinguished as a function of pump-pulse duration and probe central wavelength. Our measurements are central to the modeling and understanding of nonlinear propag...

We review the properties and applications of ultrashort laser pulses in the atmosphere, with a particular focus on filamentation. Filamentation is a non-linear propagation regime specific of ultrashort and ultraintense laser pulses in the atmosphere. Typical applications include remote sensing of atmospheric gases and aerosols, lightning control, laser-induced spectroscopy, coherent anti-stokes...

Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...

Ultrashort-pulsed lasers have been attracting worldwide interest in science and engineering. Studying the thermal deformation induced by ultrashort-pulsed lasers is important for preventing thermal damage. This article presents a new numerical method for studying thermal deformation in 3D double-layered film micro-structures exposed to ultrashort-pulsed lasers. The method is demonstrated by inv...

Four-wave mixing of an intense continuous-wave pump beam with an ultrashort soliton signal in an optical fiber is theoretically analyzed. A novel class of stable two-color coupled solitary waves is found. These vector parametric solitons represent the optimal frequency conversion of an ultrashort pulse.

The consistent theory of formation of pulsed squeezed states as a result of self-action of ultrashort light pulse in the medium with relaxation Kerr nonlinearity has been developed. A simple method to form the ultrashort light pulse with sub-Poissonian photon statistics is analyzed too.

Technological advances in ultrafast optics now allow the generation of laser pulses whose duration is as short as a few optical cycles of the electric field; furthermore, these pulses can be focused to a spot size comparable to the wavelength. These strongly focused, ultrashort laser pulses have found applications, for instance, in high-resolution microscopy, particle trapping and electron acce...

We measure the spatiotemporal field of ultrashort pulses with complex spatiotemporal profiles using the linear-optical, interferometric pulse-measurement technique SEA TADPOLE. Accelerating and decelerating ultrashort, localized, nonspreading Bessel-X wavepackets were generated from a approximately 27 fs duration Ti:Sapphire oscillator pulse using a combination of an axicon and a convex or conc...

Ultrashort pulses usually are defined as those lasting less than a nanosecond. Low-energetic ultrashort pulses can be used, for instance, as a probe for studying the dynamics of ultrafast processes. Amplifying these pulses can deliver extremely high peak power, allowing applications such as laser particle acceleration, or γ-ray generation via Compton scattering on relativistic electrons. Existi...
