Highly variable weather conditions, especially the rapidly changing water vapor distribution, bias the interpretation of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) images. Any change of atmospheric condition is reflected as differential propagation delay in the InSAR images, which is difficult to distinguish from the real ground motion. Moreover, for areas which cover a wide range of alti...
The world has seen a dramatic change in weather patterns caused by global warming. Extreme and unpredictable events are occurring more often. As is the most component of flight, if there slight chance predictability what going to be, it could help with logistical issues prevent further delays. Therefore, aircraft arrival prediction potentially be solution improve efficiency operation effectiven...
A major portion of the delay in the Air Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) in US and Europe arises from the convective weather. In the current practice of managing air traffic, the predicted storm zones are considered as deterministic obstacles and hence they are completely avoided. As a result, the current strategy is too conservative and incurs a high delay. In reality, the dynamics of the con...
In this work we present the first results of an experiment to measure and model atmospheric delays by means of GPS, Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The aim of the experiment is to device strategies to mitigate atmospheric phase delay artefacts in SAR interferograms.
1. INTRODUCTION † The primary cause of national airspace delay is convective weather. A large fraction of these delays is due specifically to en route weather (Allen et al., 2001). Crowded travel corridors such as the Great Lakes corridor from Chicago to New York experience the most significant en route convective weather delays. It is of particular importance within these high traffic regions ...
Severe weather avoidance programs (SWAP) due to convective weather are common in many of the busiest terminal areas in the US National Airspace System (NAS). In order to make efficient use of available airspace in rapidly evolving convective weather, it is necessary to predict the impacts of the weather on key resources (e.g., departure and arrival routes and fixes), with frequent updates as th...
The 28 lock and dams sites on the upper Mississippi River is currently central to transporting U.S. agricultural commodities to the world market. This aging lock and dam system and slow double lockage process at the 600-foot locks have generated concern about its navigational efficiency. The objective of this study is to examine the determinants of delay occurred at the lock and dam system on t...
Convective weather is a major contributor to air traffic delays. There is much uncertainty associated with weather predictions so stochastic models are necessary to effectively assign ground delay and route adjustments to flights. We describe a two-stage stochastic integer program for this problem. We then compare the results of this formulation to algorithms already in the literature.
Issues for near Term Operational Use of Integrated Convective Weather - Atm Decision Support Systems
Thunderstorm-related delays dominate the overall U.S. airspace delay statistics and continue to increase (Figure 1), even though a number of new weather information systems and air traffic management (ATM) decision support tools have been deployed since 1999. The FAA is also concerned that anticipated increases in air traffic will result in much worse convective weather season delays by 2014 (H...
