Lidar is an active remote sensing technology that has many advantages, but the echo lidar signal extremely susceptible to noise and complex atmospheric environment, which affects effective detection range retrieval accuracy. In this paper, a wavelet transform (WT) locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) for Rayleigh denoising was pro...

Vitamin D is a promising, though under-explored, potential modifiable risk factor for acute respiratory infections (ARIs). We sought to investigate the association of vitamin D status with ARI in a large, nationally-representative sample of non-institutionalized individuals from the United States. We analyzed 14,108 individuals over 16 years of age in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (N...

Abstract The increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere create an increase Earth’s thermal energy, which is mainly stored ocean. Quantification rate ocean heat content (OHC) vital for understanding current and future climate Earth. Linear trend lines have been frequently used to quantify long-term rates change, but are inappropriate because they cannot capture nonlinearity t...

An important element of both exploratory data analysis and many dimensionality reduction techniques is a scatterplot smoother. In both areas there is a strong need for fast and simple procedures. A major hurdle is choice of the amount of smoothing. In this paper we propose a fast and simple choice of the scatterplot smoothing parameter, based on blockwise least squares parabolic tting. Our meth...

Abstract: We propose a new segmentation and grouping framework for road map inference from GPS traces. We first present a progressive Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Application with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm with an orientation constraint to partition the whole point set of the traces into clusters that represent road segments. A new point cluster grouping algorithm, according to the topolo...

OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level and history of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). PATIENTS AND METHODS We identified 16,975 individuals (≥17 years) from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) with documented 25(OH)D levels. To investigate the association of 25(OH)D with history of CAP in these partici...

A variable span scatterplot smoother based on local linear fits is described. Local cross-validation is used to estimate the optimal span as a function of abscissa value. A rejection rule is suggested to make the smoother resistant against outliers. Computationally efficient algorithms making use of updating formulas and corresponding FORTRAN subroutines are presented.
