Accumulating evidence shows that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) acts as a multifunctional signaling molecule in plants, whereas the interaction between H2S and ethylene is still unclear. In the present study we investigated the role of H2S in ethylene-promoted banana ripening and senescence by the application of ethylene released from 1.0 g·L-1 ethephon solution or H2S with 1 mM sodium hydrosulfide (Na...

We tested the hypothesis that the neuromodulator hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus modulates the febrigenic signaling differently in sedentary and trained rats. Besides H2S production rate and protein expressions of H2S-related synthases cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3-MPST) and cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) in the POA, w...

Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays critical roles in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney diseases. This study was designed to investigate whether H2S has protective effects against diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic rats were induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin and administrated with H2S donor NaHS for 12 weeks. Rat glomerular mesangial cells ...

In this research, the antifungal role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on the postharvest pathogens Aspergillus niger and Penicillium italicum growing on fruits and under culture conditions on defined media was investigated. Our results show that H2S, released by sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) effectively reduced the postharvest decay of fruits induced by A. niger and P. italicum. Furthermore, H2S inhibit...

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is well known as a highly toxic environmental chemical threat. Prolonged exposure to H2S can lead to the formation of pulmonary edema. However, the mechanisms of how H2S facilitates edema formation are poorly understood. Since edema formation can be enhanced by an impaired clearance of electrolytes and, consequently, fluid across the alveolar epithelium, it was questioned...

BACKGROUND Hydrogen sulfide contributes to the reduction of oxidative stress-related injury in cardiomyocytes but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. AIMS Here we investigated the role of voltage-operated calcium channels (VOCCs) as mediators of the beneficial effect of H2S against oxidative stress in cultured rat cardiomyoblasts (H9c2). METHODS Intracellular calcium signals were mea...

BACKGROUND Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been shown to induce angiogenesis in in vitro models and to promote vessel growth in the setting of hindlimb ischemia. The goal of the present study was to determine the therapeutic potential of a stable, long-acting H2S donor, diallyl trisulfide, in a model of pressure-overload heart failure and to assess the effects of chronic H2S therapy on myocardial va...

We investigated the expression of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in human and rat lower urinary tract (including bladder, prostate and urethra) tissues, and we sought to determine whether H2S induces relaxation of human and Sprague-Dawley (SD) rat bladder strips. Human normal lower urinary tract tissue was obtained for the evaluation of endogenous H2S productivity using a sulphide-sensitive electrode ...

recent years, it has become clear that hydrogen sulphide (H2S) plays a number of biological roles and may function as a novel gasotransmitter in the body alongside nitric oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) [1]. H2S is synthesized naturally from L-cysteine in mammalian tissues in a reaction catalysed by two enzymes, cys-tathionine-␥-lyase (CSE) and cystathionine-␤-synthetase (CBS) [2]. Recently...

Oral bacterial hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production was estimated comparing two different colorimetric methods in microtiter plate format. High H2S production was seen for Fusobacterium spp., Treponema denticola, and Prevotella tannerae, associated with periodontal disease. The production differed between the methods indicating that H2S production may follow different pathways.
