The streptozyme test was compared with the antistreptolysin O (ASO), antideoxyribonuclease B (ADN-B), and antihyaluronidase (AH) tests. One hundred and twenty-seven human serum specimens were tested by each of the four tests. The streptozyme test detected more specimens with elevated titers than any single test; however, it was not as effective as the combination of the ASO and ADN-B tests. The...

We combine multivariate ratio analysis (MRA) of body measurements and analyses of mitochondrial and nuclear data to examine the status of several species of European paper wasps (Polistes Latreille, 1802) closely related to P. gallicus. Our analyses unambiguously reveal the presence of a cryptic species in Europe, as two distinct species can be recognized in what has hitherto been considered Po...

Findings concerning selective slow pathway radiofrequency ablation for atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) using the slow pathway potential (SPP) guided method are reported. The electrogram at the SPP recording site showed double potentials consisting of the atrial potential (A) and SPP. However, SPP is usually recorded widely in the right atrial posteroseptal region. To examin...

We screened 768 tick pools containing 6,962 ticks from Khammouan Province, Laos, by using quantitative real-time PCR and identified Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia spp., and Borrelia spp. Sequencing of Rickettsia spp.-positive and Borrelia spp.-positive pools provided evidence for distinct genotypes. Our results identified bacteria with human disease potential in ticks in Laos.

A stromal processing peptidase (SPP) cleaves a broad range of precursors targeted to the chloroplast, yielding proteins for numerous biosynthetic pathways in different compartments. SPP contains a signature zinc-binding motif, His-X-X-Glu-His, that places it in a metallopeptidase family which includes the mitochondrial processing peptidase. Here, we have investigated the mechanism of cleavage b...

Weissella spp. are non-spore forming, catalase-negative, gram-positive coccobacilli. They are often misidentified by traditional and commercial phenotypic identification methods as Lactobacillus spp. or Lactobacillus-like organisms. Weissella spp. were previously grouped along with Lactobacillus spp., Leuconostoc spp., and Pediococcus spp. Utilization of more sensitive methods like DNA sequenci...
